I think Jake has a 3 mil salary this year. Extending him should free up some cap room. They can do some simple restructures too (just pushing cap charges to future years) to get a little. In general that's a bad idea, but they always do some of it. As long as it doesn't get out of hand, where there's room this year, and big charges for lots of players later, its probably OK.

Isn't he going to burn us a new one when we extend his contract this summer?

I'm worried about that too, but one of the articles seemed to indicate he wasn't going to ask for top dollar. He's still an inconsistent and growing QB. Even medium sized QB contracts, like Brady's usually have cap values less than 3 mil in the 1st year. The salary is usually minimum because the bonus is in the 1st year. You still have the prorated part of the bonus, but I don't think he will get a huge one.

Jake don;t make no $3 million:

    Salary History

    2003 530000.00
    2004 1370000.00

I think we gave him a $2 million bonus...

Obviously not. I was going off memory. So scratch that idea.

That, and two 100K workout bonuses, would make up the 4 million dollar contract.

That would make his cap hit 2.47 million.

Assuming the minimum first year salary, that leaves 2 million in prorated bonus money just to make up the difference.

He won't get that, but perhaps near. Brady and Aaron Brooks got 10 million over 6, or something like that. That's 1.67. So we'd save about 300K.

    Jake's Cap Hit

Didn't we just eat like $3.7 million in cap space due to earned incentives? My understanding is that most of these dollars went to S. Davis and Jake. Wouldn't that leave his current cap charge much higher than what the salary history and bonus would suggest?

Sure would. Good thinking. That could be stretched out, I bet. I don't understand incentives all that well. And the post above about saving 300,000 sounded well reasoned.
