Could one of you techie guys explain how proxie servers work?

    Here is my situation:

Where I work we are using Novell BorderManager 3.7, IP addresses on the network are issued by the server automatically via DCHP and always vary when you login.

I have a computer that is connected to the network but am unable to access the internet. Our techie claims it is my PC - I think he is bullshitting me.

I don't know enough about the stuff to call his ass on the carpet but I have a feeling the jerk is doing it just to be a pain.

If he is doing it - how could he be blocking me? I have checked all the proxy on my PC and it is all correct. Since the IP address is not permanent - how could it be blocked?

Basically you connect to the proxy server and then to outside your network.

You can't block a dynamic IP address from a proxy. You can only block specific IP address or IP ranges which is a possibility.

That is what I thought - can you block it via the MAC address?

Actually I think that is possible with some Proxy Servers. I know I've seen it and I know it can be done on our firewall.

Novell BorderManager - either version 3.7 or 3.8 - not sure which one.

Your problem is Bordermanager - that product SUCKS. And your techie therefore sucks for using it. And your company sucks for still putting money in a dead horse (Novell). And therefore you suck for being part of said company.

That said, could be your PC, but why wouldn't your techie work on that too?
