That would work just fine for me! Better rebounding and defense! Which is what we need.

Anyone ready to say maybe Doh was correct on this one? Papa McCants is in on the action now.

McCants finding himself in Williams' doghouse after subpar play
By Keith Jarrett, Staff Writer, Asheville Citizen-Times
    Jan. 3, 2004 11:48 p.m.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Another North Carolina game, another Rashad McCants incident.

In what is becoming a pattern, Tar Heels coach Roy Williams yanked his leading scorer off the floor in anger once again, this time in Saturday's 61-56 loss to Kentucky.

And with an offense that was struggling to find the nylon, his decision to sit down 19 points a game may have cost him a victory.

McCants went to the bench at the 13:16 mark of the second half after turning the ball over in front of the UNC bench.

The 6-4 sophomore and Asheville native grabbed an offensive rebound near the baseline, chose not to pass the ball back outside and had the ball stripped and bounce off his leg as he tried to drive to the basket.

Williams, just a few feet from where his wife Wanda and McCants' father James sat next to each other in the first row behind the Tar Heels' bench, was livid at the turnover.

He stomped the floor, clutched his fists and shouted before subbing for McCants.

While Kentucky, with a sellout crowd of 23,014 getting louder and louder, was in the process of taking the game over with its offense, McCants sat for eight minutes.

Seldom-used reserves Damian Price and Reyshawn Terry played instead of McCants, who re-entered the game with 5:17 remaining.

He played less than two minutes, deflected a pass that led to a turnover and then turned the ball over himself before going to the bench for good for the final 3:25 of the game.

Williams' post-game assessment of the guy who leads his team and the ACC in scoring?

"(McCants) was 2-of-7 from the floor, scored four points and had five turnovers," he said. "That's not a very good day."

Asked why McCants sat for all but 8:25 of the second half, Williams said, "I've got a rule that I play who I want to play, and I didn't want him in the game at that specific time. I was frustrated."

McCants was less chatty about his minutes.

He said he didn't know why he sat for so long and that he was surprised that he didn't play much in the second half.

Asked if he was upset about the benching, McCants replied, "It's all over now. Let's not start anything."

His father said he was "very surprised and very upset" about the long stretch of inactivity.

"I don't understand it. With the kind of numbers Rashad can put up, why is he sitting," said James McCants. "If there is a problem between him and the coach, if there is a grudge between them, let's get it resolved and let's resume playing basketball. This was ridiculous and there's no sense for it."

In the preseason Williams talked about McCants' need to improve both his attitude and his defensive shortcomings, both of which were issues with former coach Matt Doherty.

Earlier this season, Williams sent McCants to the bench for failing to take a charge against Cleveland State.

Against UNC Wilmington, Williams banished McCants and teammate Jesse Holley to the locker room late in the first half for failing to follow the Tar Heels tradition of standing and applauding a teammate's good play.

Two Asheville natives, two stubborn personalities intent on doing things their way.

If McCants doesn't soon figure out that Williams will win this battle of wills, he may find himself with more opportunities to sit and ponder until he does.

Instead of all the shit the reporters like to stir up and speculate about I prefer the words right out of the coaches mouth :

    UNC-Miami: Roy Williams Quotes
By Andy Britt - Inside Carolina
    Date: Jan 7, 2004

UNC head coach Roy Williams addresses the media following his team's 89-64 win over Miami.

    Opening Statement:
“Needless to say, this feels better than it did after the game in Lexington. That’s one thing we said when we went into the locker room. We didn’t play our best game by any means, but [Rob] Hite is a very, very gifted player.
“I was pleased with Jawad [Williams]. I thought he did a nice job on Darius [Rice]. I also understand that Darius just had a bad night and we can’t take credit for all that. I do believe that we tried to focus on making every shot difficult and being able to get over top of all the screens that they set for him.

“We wanted to force some turnovers and get our break going, and I think we did that. We didn’t want to play scramble on every possession, because I think teams get used to it. We tried to mix it up and vary it so they didn’t know exactly when it was coming. Our defense did dictate a lot of what happened in the game. You have heard me complain about our defense, but I thought our defense was much better tonight.

“In the first part of the game, I think our guys were really tight. Around here when you lose a game, people think it’s about the end of the world. Players start feeling stress and more pressure because the expectations and standards. So early in the game, I thought we were a little tentative. After we settled down a little bit, we got the ball inside to Sean for some really good looks and his 23-and-16 looks not only good from his standpoint, but also for how the players got him the ball.

“So much attention has been paid to Rashad McCants, because I took him out of the game at Kentucky. It’s been totally unfair to him, because I took out four other guys with him. But the only one they’ve talked about is Rashad. In the second half, I took out Rashad and Raymond at the same time and nobody talked about that.

“I was very pleased with Rashad. I would be surprised if this was not his best defensive game.

“Needless to say, I thought Jackie Manuel was huge for us. Jawad’s defense, Sean’s inside play and Rashad’s defense…and Jackie just hitting the board and doing all the little things he always does. And fortunately we caught Darius on a night when he didn’t have a very good game.

“May didn’t play a great game tonight and he had 23 and 16. But when I say he didn’t have a great game, it’s because I have such high standards for him. One time he was so open he didn’t know what to do, so he missed the shot and then missed the tip-in also. Again, I think he was trying to work on his rebound numbers (kidding).

“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as I think we can shoot the ball. We were over 50-percent, but we missed three of our last four shots. You don’t like to see that, because I like to keep it above there. I like keeping the other team below 40-percent, so I think our defense was good.”

On how Rashad responded in practice this week:
“He practiced really well. I’m very disappointed that our own hometown newspapers are making such a big deal out of him. I would say that our two practices have been two of our best for everybody, not just Rashad. He’s got that stone face and his mannerisms and looks make him seem like he’s pouting all the time. I thought he was very attentive in practice and I thought he was very attentive in the game tonight. He had a bad game Saturday, but some other folks had a bad game Saturday also.”

That is why I agree with Roy putting the clamps on him right now. McCants needs it for the teams good and for his own good down the road. One of these days we may hear McCants thanking Roy for making a man outta him.
