High Point University has announced that they will open next year's schedule with a game at Duke for the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament. The format will be different with doubleheaders at California, Connecticut, Duke and Kansas.

I'm posting the story so you won't have to register...

HPU, Duke to meet in basketball

Believe it! Duke will play High Point.

Believe it! Mike Krzyzewski against Bart Lundy.

Believe it! Shavlik Randolph matching up with Danny Gathings.

    Believe it!

A contract has been signed for High Point University to open the 2004-05 college basketball season against Atlantic Coast Conference power Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, HPU athletic director Woody Gibson confirmed on Wednesday.

The game, scheduled for Nov. 11, 2004, will be part of a doubleheader to open the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The other opponents at Cameron have not been determined.

The Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, a combined effort of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society, will expand next season to 16 teams at four sites.

Connecticut, Kansas, California and Duke are scheduled to host doubleheaders, with the semifinals and finals to be held the following week at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

"(Duke vs. High Point) will be the tip-off game of the college season," said HPU assistant coach Josh Schertz. "We're hoping to get it on ESPN."

There's only a small chance the game will not be held, noted Gibson. The NCAA's rule limiting teams to two exempt tournaments every four years is being challenged in court, and the rule is expected to be declared illegal.

"We've talked to the people at Duke and at Coaches vs. Cancer, and everybody thinks it is going to be fine," Gibson said. "If the courts rule that the NCAA's rule of two exempt tournaments in four years is legal, that may change the landscape of this tournament.

"But nobody thinks that is what will happen."

Also during the 2004-05 season, High Point has games lined up at Pittsburgh (Nov. 27), at Michigan (Dec. 8) and at James Madison (Dec. 20).

The Panthers, who finished 7-20 last year, open the 2003-04 season on Friday with a home game against Allen, an NAIA school. Coach Lundy's first HPU team travels to Clemson on Monday.
