Quick Musings of Sports Coverage in the Triad

Just a few quick ramblings on the sports coverage in the Triad after going home this weekend to celebrate my dad's birthday . .

1)ESPNRADIO's 1590 signal is worse than WFNZ's at night !!!!! I couldn't even pick up the station in Clemmons Sat. night once I got into town . . They must power down to 9V at night !!!!!!!!!!


2)I like they was FOX8 does a 30 min. sportstalk show on the weekends (Sat & Sun. nights) :thumbup: !!!! I think Rich Brenner runs the best sports department of any TV station in NC. He had a reporter down in Homestead to cover the final WInston Cup race of the season, a good preview of the upcoming Panthers game, Canes & Generals coverage (If I'd know the Gmen were playing, I might've gone to the game first before coming home . . . ). Obviously being an O&O station, I'm sure they get tons of money from FOX Broadcasting Group to maintain a bigger sports/news/weather dept. in such a midsize TV market as the Piedmont Triad. I wish more TV stations did what FOX8 does, spend the extra money to be able to send reporters to cover stories vs. just relying on network feeds from other stations to do their reoprts


3)Its scary, I get WSOC-TV better out of Charlotte in Clemmons vs. WLXV in Winston-Salem :jawomg: :jawomg: !!!!!!! I think ABC needs to make this one of their O&O stations and throw some money into that station !!!!! Sinclair Broadcasting (assuming they still own the station) is a cheapass outfit IMHO !!!!

sds, WGHP does a Friday night high school football show at 11:00 beating the other 2 stations, and two 30 minute sports shows on the weekend.

FOX8 is doing over 38 hours weekly of local news production. They've got the largest staff of the Triad stations.

 

Fox 8 does a very good job covering sports...I have always like Rich Brenner and Kevin Connalley...they do great things over there.

News 14 is live with the only nightly 30 minute sports show in the market....BTV, SOC do 30 mins of hs football on fridays, and CNC does their Sunday 30 minute deal...I think, for a new operation like News 14, we have proven to be a solid competitor in the market.

CCB does their panther shows (unleashed? got game? unsure to the titles), but I am hearing some non-favorable things about them on the street. Just my .02

Is WCCB hip style of doing the Panthers post game shows too hip for some of the old farts here in town/too hip for some peoples tastes in this market ? me personally, I have no problem with it!!!! I think their formula atrracts more people to watch the news vs. doing a by the book highlights show that the other stations do.

 

Fox 18's shows are pretty unwatchable. They are trying to hard to make it some kind of hip "we're just hanging out and talking sports" show, and they don't have the chemistry or good enough technical directing to pull it off.

 

Fox 6 in Birmingham #39 {O&O} does a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 30 min sports shows.
Fri - HS football
Sat - College football
Sun - Pro football/racing

Used to live there. Fox 6 is the "heritage" TV station for the market, as dominant with news as SOC is here.

 

I remember them pulling newscasts from their other stations in big market (might've been St. Louis). I bet you the idiot VP who green lighted this decision is some 30 year old snotty kid with an MBA who is only thinking about the bottom line vs. how bad the stations ratings will go in the tank if news is taken off the air (WCNC went several years without news up to the late 80's; U see how long its taken them to get within sniffing distance of WBTV & WSOC TV). If they don't want to spend money on a news dept, they should just sell their TV properties and get out of the bizness !!!!!
