I wonder if his wrist is really broken and not sprained. Strange that the injury reportabley caused them to make a trade if he was just "going to be out a few games."

What happened there? I've been searching for links but can't find any.

Avalanche Makes Trade with Washington; Paul Kariya Sidelined Indefinitely
    (10/22/2003)

The Colorado Avalanche has acquired left wing Steve Konowalchuk and a third round selection in the 2004 Entry Draft from the Washington Capitals. In return, the Avalanche gave up the services of Bates Battaglia and the rights to forward Jonas Johansson.

“Steve Konowalchuk is a reliable, experienced forward capable of playing at both ends of the ice,” said Colorado Avalanche Vice President of Player Personnel Michel Goulet. “He can play in a variety of roles, and we are pleased to add a quality player like Steve to our roster.”

Konowalchuk, 31, was originally selected by the Washington Capitals in the third round, 58th overall, in the 1991 Entry Draft out of Portland (WHA) and was a regular with the Caps since the 1992-93 season.

The six-foot, one-inch, 205-pound native of Salt Lake City, Utah recorded 15 goals, 15 assists, and 70 penalty minutes in 77 games with Washington in 2002-03. He has one assist to his credit to date this season.

The Colorado Avalanche also announced that left wing Paul Kariya will be sidelined indefinitely with a sprained wrist.

“After further examination earlier this afternoon, it was determined that Paul Kariya had sprained his right wrist midway through the game last night,” said Avalanche Head Trainer Pat Karns. “Paul will be out indefinitely, but fortunately nothing is broken.”

Due to the injury to Paul Kariya, left wing Brad Larsen has been recalled from Hershey (AHL). Larsen currently leads the Bears in scoring with two goals and four assists in five games.

That stinks. Kariya is one of my favorite players.

The Avs getting Konowalchuk is like the Mavs getting Antoine Walker.
