Just wondering if Jack Del Rio (after 1 year as DC) was prepaired to wear the many hats needing to be worn as HC?

Jaguars | Del Rio Doesn't Like "Circus" - from www.KFFL.com
    Fri, 29 Aug 2003 10:19:27 -0700

Fresh off published reports that the Jacksonville Jaguars had offered Jaguars QB Mark Brunell to a trio of teams, Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio staged an assault on the media - criticizing coverage as "hype" that has turned the quarterback situation into a "circus," according to Charles Robinson, of the Orlando Sentinel. Del Rio refused to say Brunell will start the season for the Jaguars or guarantee that he wasn't going to be traded. Instead, he said Jacksonville never made a "direct offer of our starting quarterback." He then barely stopped short of calling published reports about Brunell's availability lies and condemned the media for not pursuing more upbeat coverage. His tirade came after various outlets - including ESPN and the New York Daily News - reported Tuesday the Jaguars had contacted the New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens to gauge interest in Brunell. The reports said all three had no interest in acquiring him.

I think, as much as anything, the problem is that so many of those guys are green. Brunell, as a leader, is a lame duck.
His OC, Musgrave, was a quitter and at best a quiet figure. Kenny Anderson isn't a loud, boisterous man either.
And his DC and GM are both former Ravens, neither of which have ever had this much responsibility or needed leadership; same for JDR. He fits the same criteria as the other two.
The difference is, he's the charismatic and boisterous leader. Now, there's no Brian Billick to take the heat of the lights that go with the spotlight. Now, there's no Jimmy Johnson. No John Fox even. Now it's totally his show, no mentor, no elder voice in the background.

The Jaguars are leaderless. Their three stars are, in order, about to be cut; injured; and suspended. The OL they spent a lot to draft? Not working out. Their DL, that they spent even more on? You've got situational ends with knee injuries and DTs falling on the ground in dehydration. And now, of course, they're being subpoena'd.

The only positive out of this preseason, IMO, is seeing Leftwich and then Garrard each play well for them. It suggests that, at least, Musgrave's still a good QB technician (Anderson's no slouch, either). One who can actually get his QBs together. And sometimes, you can get by with drama if the QBs can sling. But this year will be a struggle for them, and it's quite possible they'll be in the top 5 in the draft next year as well. And they'll have to keep drafting defense.

I've always said that I didn't think that JDR was ready to be a HC. He doesn't have the experience (except 1 yr. as DC with us) of running "the big show". I don't wish him any ill-will, but I just think that he's ill prepared to be a HC right now. He should've stuck either with Balt. or us longer then jumped ship after a few years of being a leader on a small scale to the HC job somewhere. Hindsight is 20/20.

That's why you make the big bucks Jack. You ain't seen nothing yet. Show the media your weakness, and they will eat you alive.

Man I'm glad the Panthers hired Fox. He's handled the media pretty well IMO

On the other hand, if Fox keeps lying to the fans and telling them there is open competition for positions when he is, in reality, extremely prejudiced toward a player, then he is going to experience some of that same type shit JDR is catching.

Well, I'm gonna keep hoping that Fox is really lying to Del Rio, trying to smoke him into game-planning for a Peete offense and suddenly slipping him a "Weinke" at the last minute.

If he indeed starts Peete and we lose to the Jags, it's gonna hit the fan for real.
