I heard on the radio this morning that the publisher has yank George's Deal. Can't find anything on the web though.

Publisher gives up on 'Never Give Up'
Shinn's tell-all deemed too potentially offensive
    MICHELLE CROUCH
    Staff Writer

George Shinn's tell-all book about the Charlotte Hornets' tumultuous move from here to New Orleans is dead.

The publisher said Monday it has canceled the book, partly because of fears it would alienate Charlotte residents and longtime Hornets fans.

"The quality of the writing and his treatment of sensitive issues raised concerns," said Stephanie Williams, senior publicist at Louisiana-based Pelican Publishing. "In general, Charlotte is an important market to us, and we want to be very careful not to offend anyone."

Shinn and his public relations staff did not return calls Monday afternoon.

The 192-page book, titled "Never Give Up," was due out in October. It was pitched as Shinn's account of "the agony and acrimony of the team's final decade in Charlotte."

It was advertised in Pelican's fall catalog and is still listed on Amazon.com under its original title, "Flagrant Foul."

Pelican's editors had already gone through two revisions of the manuscript and asked Shinn to do more rewriting, but he would not commit, Williams said.

"Shinn was not happy with the results, and we weren't willing to wait forever," she said, stressing that there is no ill will between them.

Shinn moved his team to New Orleans after years of failed negotiations to get a new arena built in Charlotte and an increasingly bitter relationship with Charlotte fans.

An arena is now being built for an NBA expansion team, the Charlotte Bobcats, which will begin playing in 2004.

Yet another sign that the people of New Orleans are beginning to see what a fungus Shinn is. I just don't see this marriage lasting too much longer - I'll say by 2007 he'll be looking for a new city to move to and N.O. won't miss them at all. (Unless he sells before then, which means someone else will be moving the team).

What might have been: Shinn's book
    TOM SORENSEN

George Shinn's book about his Hornets, the inside story of the team's last decade in Charlotte, will not be printed by the Louisiana outfit that had planned to publish it.

I hope somebody else picks it up. I have no idea what the book will say. But I'm guessing it will go a little like this.

CHAPTER 1: IT WAS THEIR FAULT.

It was their fault. The reason the Hornets had to leave Charlotte was their fault. Who are they? They are the politicians, the media and a lot of others who don't include me.

Let's list the culprits in alphabetic order -- a lot of others, media and politicians. Let's see if the names George or Shinn appear on the list. Ah. They do not.

You ever read any French philosophers? You ever read any existentialists? You ever read any great novels? I haven't, either. Nobody has. You know why?

People want to read real books such as this one by real people such as me.

Tell me these titles do not make you want to drive to a book place and buy this.

Chapter 2: It's still their fault.

Chapter 3: All the good things I did for Charlotte.

It's the shortest chapter in the book. See? I do have a sense of humor. Be here all week. Actually, I'll be in New Orleans.

Chapter 4: Celebrities who have met me.

Chapter 5: Greedy players who want me to pay them what other teams would. There's no loyalty anymore. I gave these players everything. And then they ran off and signed with somebody else before I could trade them.

Chapter 6: How to break the ice on a first date.

Chapter 7. Say, you might be wondering whose fault it is. Theirs!

I'm the guy who put Charlotte on the map. Considered running for governor. Threatened to move the team to South Carolina. Denied making the threat. Saw a tape of me making the threat. Stopped denying it.

Almost forgot. Along with the politicians and the media, the reason I had to leave town was the fault of cameras and tape recorders. You don't need a machine. I'll tell you what I said.

Yes, I made mistakes. Here's a tip for you younger readers: Never date a woman named Jane Doe. But after all I did for this town, you'd think the city would apologize. Instead, the city wanted me to.

Some think that if I had, the team would still be in Charlotte. Well, it's not and, for the first time anywhere, this book explains why.

Chapter 8 is a doozey: It continues to be their fault!

Publish my book and I'll throw in a copy of Ray Wooldridge's greatest hits. The singer looks like Ray anyway. It's actually Wayne Newton. The man rocks. So does my book.

Maybe I could sell it on the Internet like Stephen King sold one of his.

If I can get readers to Chapter 9, they'll be hooked.

Chapter 9: Let's make sure I have this right. Whose fault is it? After reviewing the records, I've concluded that it is the fault of everybody but me.

Folks, if this book sells, I've already got the first chapter of the sequel.

Chapter 1: It was New Orleans' fault.
