nope....he contacted five black coaches and they all turned the interview down because everyone and their brother knew mooch was going to be the coach. Mooch was the number one choice the year Millen was hired and everyone knew it then but SF wouldn't let him out of his contract so he hired morningwood largely from mooch's recomendation....as soon as SF hired him, everyone knew he'd end up in Detroit, it was the worst kept secret in the NFL.

the five black coaches didn't want to be the "token" interview. Millen did tell them Mooch was his number one canidate. What's wrong with being honest? He should have lied to one of them, it would have saved him 200K.

what exactly was millen supposed to do? He tried to interview them and they declined.

Except for the fact that 5 black men declined to be interviewed by Millen rather than be treated like a token. I think that makes this specific case a little different. I'll agree with you on owners and their circle of friends line though. I've even said that here before.

It does make it strange. They declined because Millen told them he had already made up his mind. Those may not have been his exact words, but it was pretty close. I almost guarantee you that's how the NFL took it. He can hire Mooch. But remember Del Rio got the Jags job as an underdog because he blew the owner away in the interview. Those black coaches never had that chance. If Millen had interviewed a black coach before interviewing Mooch, he would have had it made. Someone would have interviewed. And if his mind wasn't at least a little bit open, he deserved the fine. And failing to do that, Millen had told the black coaches, Mooch had a fine interview, but my mind is open, someone would have. If his mind was open, they would not have been token interviews, even if they would have been underdogs.

Remember Millen is a repeat offender. His hiring of Morningwheg without interviewing anyone else is what brought this policy about. Millen showed he was going to stay in that circle no matter what, and no one else could even apply. There have been alot of judgements won on behavior just like that.

So yes, its a tougher case than I made out. But its not the farce that some people are saying. The black coaches just want their qualifications CONSIDERED, and not automatically trashed because they don;t have the right friends.

Remember also that Jerry Richardson got very little grief, if any, (except here) for hiring Fox over Marvin Lewis. JR seriously interviewed 3 black candidates. He was especially serious about Dungy. He chose the white one, and everyone was fine about it. The black coaches had had their chance. That's all the policy asks.

I addressed this in the other reply, but I wanted to emphasize that he said considerably more than that Mooch was the #1 candidate, to my memory. He virtually said the interviews were just going through the motions. He could have honestly opened his mind.

This policy was announced AFTER Jerry Jones had committed to Bill Parcells. He still got Denny Green to interview.

Millen knew this was the policy from the get go. He could have gotten an interview if he hadn't already shut his mind, and advertised that it was shut.

I am a registered Republican. I just do not believe in discrimination, and I really do not beleive in stupidity. (I'm talking about Millen here.)

So how much better is Mooch's record than Denny Green's? (Hint, its not.)
