Peete also said Wednesday that he believes these Panthers have a decent shot at -- get this -- the Super Bowl. In a Charlotte Touchdown Club speech to 325 fans at the new Westin hotel and later in a one-on-one interview, Peete said this is just the sort of on-the-cusp team that might get him the ring that has eluded his grasp for 15 seasons.

What else does Mr. Optimistic think? Peete believes Julius Peppers could soon be as dominant as Lawrence Taylor or Reggie White. He thinks offensive players in the NFL are smarter than defensive players. And he believes new Panthers running back Stephen Davis is a godsend.

    Whaddya think?

Peete believes in himself and his team. I bought a Peete jersey last year, and I will proudly will wear it again this year. People like to talk smack about him, but he did everything that he was asked to do last year. Even with a terrible O-line and a lack of offensive weapons, Peete still won 7 games. I think with an improved O-line, Stephen Davis, and better recievers we can win at least 9 games. IF Jake can surplant Peete as the starter AND he is a big improvement that will be GREAT!:D . The Panthers are capable of winning games with Peete as QB,since we are a ball control O,that runs the ball first. I hope Delhoume is the franchise QB we need, but if its Peete I believe he can get it done! GO PANTHERS!!! Cya sittin in section 116 row 11;) :boune:  :boune:  :boune:

As good as Big Mark was in his day, he was never so bold to make those comments.

My opinion is that every player on every team should have the same outlook on the upcoming season, or they shouldn't be playing. But still, I go back to when the DL talked about breaking the sack record before the season started. It's just talk, but it's good to hear.

Rodney's trying to be optomistic, but it's also a good opportunity for him to keep his specific fans. I doubt he said it just to be political, but I doubt it hurts him in the eyes of fans who want to root for him.

I don't see us as a lock for the playoffs - this time of year, the Bengals and Cardinals are possibilities.

Every player on every team should feel that way. Otherwise, what do you play for? BTW: I think there are about 20 teams with legit shots at making and winning the Super Bowl. We are one of them. There are a ton of factors that can determine success but running the ball and playing great defense can take you a long way in the league. We do have a shot - but EVERYTHING would have to fall into place - which is reaching right now. We still need some pro bowl offensive players IMO, since we have NONE, as well as proven depth in the secondary. We're getting closer and closer though! :D

3 Things I really like to see...
    1) The defense plays like last season or better
    2) Delhomme be the real deal
    3) Foster return to top form

Outside of limiting injuries - those 3 things above make us very dangerous in our division. If everyone else plays near abilities and those 3 things occur - we can make a move.

I'm gonna add Kevin Dyson being 100% to that list and we make a SERIOUS push in the NFC not just the NFC South

I agree with Shocker and y2b ... if you don't have that mindset going into the season, then you're missing something. And with the parity in the NFL, who's to say it can't happen? Personally, I think we might be a year away, but really, none of us has any clue what impact the new additions will have to the team. With a defense as strong as last year (including a year of experience behind Peppers), and with Davis and possibly Delhomme, you just never know. It certainly makes for a more exciting pre-season.

Short on time, did not read Peete's article. But if he thinks we can get to a superbowl with him as the QB - no. Can we get to a Superbowl, if the OL comes together and JD performs above average, yes. This assumes our D does not falter more than a spot or two from last season.

Can JP be as good as he pointed out - yes. Are we a lock for the playoffs - NFC SOUTH will be a damn tough division next year, but I would not rule it out.

I'm not sure I would say that Peete said specifically that they'd go to the SB with him at QB. In fact, the article doesn't even have a specific quote about Peete referring to his SB comment.

This is a classic example of headlining with one thing and then having the article talk about several others. But hey, it got us to read it, so i guess it worked.
