Panthers snare Proehl with 3-year contract
    By JIM THOMAS Post-Dispatch
    updated: 03/15/2003 07:49 PM

Wide receiver Ricky Proehl's five-year tenure with the Rams is over. Proehl agreed to terms on a three-year, $3 million contract Saturday afternoon that will make him a Carolina Panther.

After Proehl visited Carolina on Wednesday, the Panthers indicated it might be a couple of weeks before they talked contract with him and his agent, Alan Herman.

But then the Arizona Cardinals got involved, and that speeded up the process.

"Arizona wanted to fly him out Sunday for a visit Monday," Herman said. "That certainly pushed Carolina. It was nice at the end that he had two teams that wanted to come in, and in essence give him the respect that he deserves. Good for Ricky. At least he feels wanted."

Proehl and Herman were disappointed that the Rams had Proehl in limbo at the start of the free agency period. Coach Mike Martz couldn't give a definitive answer as to whether the team wanted Proehl back during a press conference on February 28, the first day of free agency.

It was only on Tuesday, when Carolina finalized plans to bring Proehl in for a visit, that the Rams made a one-year offer to Proehl for the veteran's minimum of $755,000.

All along, Proehl wanted a two- or three-year deal from the Rams with a modest signing bonus.

"Ricky had five great years in St. Louis," Herman said. "He loved his time in St. Louis. The fans adored him and he loved the fans, and it was a great match. But in terms of being able to put together a financial package, we were unable to do that. For whatever reason."

    Jackson agrees to terms

Tyoka Jackson, a versatile member of the Rams' defensive line rotation, agreed to terms Friday on a three-year deal to stay with the team. Financial details weren't immediately available.

"Tyoka's extremely pleased and excited to be returning to the Rams," said Jackson's agent, Zachery Jones. "He's looking forward to ending his career with the Rams."

Jackson joined the Rams in 2001, signing as a free agent from Tampa Bay. During his two seasons in St. Louis, Jackson has played in all 35 regular-season and postseason games without a start.

But he has proven to be a valuable part of defensive line coach Bill Kollar's rotation, at both end and tackle. Whenever Jackson gets a chance to play, he usually makes something happen. He had 32 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble in 2001. Last season he recorded career highs in tackles (37) and sacks (3 1/2), and also had 11 quarterback pressures.

"He was pretty much set on returning to the Rams," Jones said. "He and Lovie Smith have been on the sidelines together most of Tyoka's career."

Smith, the Rams' defensive coordinator, and Jackson have been on the same defense together for the past seven seasons. Jackson, 31, played for Tampa Bay from 1996-2000, during which time Smith was the Bucs' linebackers coach.

Jackson is the third member of the Rams to re-sign with the team, joining Aeneas Williams and offensive tackle Grant Williams.

From all I can gather Gadsden is a possession receiver and that is exactly what Proehl (AND ol' Moose) is. Gadsden also has that “bad locker room mojo” rap which makes me NOT want him around. We need a deep threat now and Robinson or Dyson would serve that purpose. I really wish we would bring in Chiaverini for a serious look. If he has that sneaky speed that Jeffers had he is young and would be cheap. Jenkins is too similar to Stevaphone and I don’t know why we would need him, unless we were going to unload Stevie.)

if the panthers can unload smith -- i dont think he's a "fox" player -- it would be a heck of an upgrade to have andre johnson.

It looks like they are gearing up for a trade in the draft plus an upgrade in the wr corps. Hopefully we can sign mo and dyson. I would even prefer robinson but he wants too much. The seventh round pick to be given is great but from what I understand he is supposed to get 2.0 mil and if we traded for him we get stuck with that cap hit. I heard that we are supposed to trade up with chicago; giving them our #9 pick, smith and possibly a 5th round. That wouldn't be bad if we get ajohnson. Him with proehl and possibly dyson and the rest of the o upgrades would be a major upgrade in offense. Can we say playoff city if we do that.In the second round we probably get foster.
