My concern is for that shoulder - is it one of those that will require surgery, and/or pop-out from a good hit? Is he just "resting" it, get the $, and have surgery?

Based on the history of our medical staff (Chuck Smith), I hope we get a 2nd & 3rd opinion.

This is the exact senerio that screws the Panthers everytime. We compete for a proven player and when it's time to put up or shut up, we always put up, then get screwed.

I'm for walking away from this one. This is the perfect get screwed situation. Davis is coming off an injury and poor season, whether it be offensive scheme or not. He is commanding alot of up front money and only two teams are in the running. Looks like a bad situation all around.

I reallly wanted Davis, but I also want a couple WR, OL and decent QB.

The question would be how much higher? You have got to spend the $$ somewhere - so up the anty a bit. Got to say though, there is a limit to what he is worth.

Thought I read a quote from Hurney saying "they were still negotiating" that tells me were talking bigger numbers then originally offered, The length of time tells me we're still not willing to throw the armored car at him. I'll bet he (Davis) comes around and signs later today.

    Yup, I did...

Veteran receiver Proehl visits today; source: RB Davis wants higher offer
    PAT YASINSKAS
    Staff Writer

    Ricky Proehl

As they wait for a decision by Stephen Davis, the Carolina Panthers aren't standing still in free agency.

Free-agent guard Doug Brzezinski visited with the Panthers on Tuesday, wide receiver Ricky Proehl will visit today, and the team also is in negotiations with tight end Reggie Kelly.

Proehl, a 13-year veteran, is a Wake Forest product and could add depth to Carolinas' wide receiving core. He received an offer for the veteran's minimum ($750,000) from the St. Louis Rams on Tuesday.

The Panthers have also had Brandon Stokley and Kevin Dyson in for visits recently and continue talks with the agents for both.

Free-agent running back Stacey Mack told reporters in Houston he expects to visit the Panthers, but nothing officially has been set up.

Mack, a career backup in Jacksonville, is looking for a situation where he can be a starter, and he could be an alternative if the Panthers don't land Davis.

The Panthers also had former Buffalo running back Shawn Bryson in for a visit Monday.

A source close to Davis said the former Washington running back views Carolina as a perfect situation, but isn't happy with the Panthers' offer.

Houston is the other team involved in the pursuit and it's likely Davis will end up with the Texans unless the Panthersincrease their offer.

Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said the team still is negotiating with Davis.

No matter who ends up as Carolina's feature back, the team wants to give him improved blocking. That's where Kelly and Brzezinski could fit in.

Kelly spent the past four seasons with Atlanta, making 47 starts. Although his career receiving numbers (69 catches for 790 yards and two touchdowns) aren't overly impressive, he is considered a strong blocker.

When the Panthers released tight end Wesley Walls last month, they made it very clear they expect strong blocking from that position.

Kelly also is in negotiations with Cincinnati and the Falcons are believed to have some interest in re-signing him.

Brzezinski has been a starter in Philadelphia and the Panthers are looking for help in the middle of the offensive line. Jamar Nesbit, last year's starter at left guard, is a free agent and the Panthers aren't expected to re-sign him.

Carolina also could set up a visit with Charlotte native Mo Collins, who has been a starting guard with Oakland. Carolina was in the running for former St. Louis guard Tom Nutten, but he agreed to a contract with the New York Jets.

Free-agent fullback James Hodgins told reporters during a visit to Arizona the Panthers have shown interest and a visit could follow. The Panthers have Brad Hoover as their starting fullback, but could be looking to add depth.

The Panthers also have shown interest in defensive back Jason Sehorn, who was released last week by the New York Giants, and he could visit by the end of the week.

I agree. You're getting, IMO, the most productive possibility at RB. He's worth more. If it takes $200k a year, I say go. Spread it out. Ask what it takes and see if it's possible.
But more than that and we're just waiting to be part of the slowest bidding war ever.

I'm not concerned about salary as much as bonus - and he seems to want bonus money.

If we pay him $4 mill salary, and he runs like he did in '99, 00, 01, then that's a bargain. I'll pay $4 million for 1400 yards. If not, cut him, and don't get killed by the bonus.

But no $8 million bonus. If we do that, he'll break his back in mini camp.

Like this - 3 year deal. $4 million bonus, $min salary. Year 2, 3 - $3 or $4 million salary. If he's Stephen Davis of the past, that's a friggin deal. If not, he got $5 million from us for this year and we cut him.

Am I off base on his value, or is this what ya'll are thinking, too?
