Here's where we stand per John Clayton of ESPN.

    Here's our expected moves

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/clayton_john/1510618.html

7.155 million under before the cuts
    2.844 million cutting Wesley Walls
    1.466 million cutting Lamar Smith
    1.000 million cutting Melvin Tuten
    --------
    12.465 million under the cap
    -7.500 cutting Gilbert June 1
    ---------
    19.965 million under the cap

Still more cap room may be made by restructuring Moose and Stuessie and maybe cutting Kasay. Looks like we'll have over 22-23 million to spend on FA's and draft picks.

Weinke depends on when he's cut due to his roster bonus kicking in.

Ok, true about timing of the cut, but all I am getting at is that we also have other obvious cuts ahead besides those listed such as Weinke and Lamar Smith.

Imho cutting Lamar Smith is far from a sure thing. I think he will be the fall back position if we don't sign a free agent running back capable of being our feature back. I would not be particularly pleased with this arrangement, but I can see us going into the season with a Lamar Smith / Dee Brown combination and waiting for Foster to get healthy. Not on my wish list, but I have to say it's a distinct possibility.

either way, this team has a little to spend and the ability to cut others for moves they should make (i.e. OT means saving $1 mil on Tuten, RB means getting some back for Smith, etc.). This should be about enough to get two or three Fields-value FAs, and a couple of scrubs, with the ability to make some more moves in June.
