I have tried several virus scans. I have downloaded the removal tool from symantec for this virus. For some reason it will not remove it from this particular file. There were 2 infected files one was fixed by Norton Anti Virus. I will try the Microtrend site also. Thanks

track down and delete the file manually... then rerun Norton... after that do a thorough Disk scann and defrag

I know where the virus is. But not sure if I can delete the file without killing the OS. The virus is in the Windows\Explorer.EXE file. Can I delete this file and not lose windows.

it will probably damage Internet Explorer, but windows should survive... simple reinstall IE after you've completed the other steps I said

Explorer.exe is not IE, that is iexplorer.exe. Explorer.exe runs file access (desktop, my computer, Windows explorer, etc)

Deleting it will kill the OS.

Search Microsoft for instructions on unpacking explorer.exe from the .CAB file on the OS installation CD. Unpack it to a new directory, boot in DOS and then copy and paste it over the infected file.

    This should fix your problem.
