Irrelevant. Now that we have Darnold every drive will end with points.

Isn't there some coach in college who never punts? Statistics!

Some teams probably shouldn't punt inside of a certain range. For instance, I've never understood why rebuilding teams would ever punt on 4th and 3 or less. It's the one area where you could theoretically game the system and exceed expectations. A 4th down conversion is essentially a takeaway, which correlate strongly to wins. If it fails, you're probably a two win team instead of a four win team and you get a higher draft pick. There's literally no downside.

On the flipside, going for it on 4th and 12 inside your own 20 would be mindless bullshit, regardless of talent level. There's a sweet spot that applies to each team.

This is the part all of the wannabe bill james of football miss, if you have Aaron Rodgers go for it more if you have Sam darnold there's an old foxism that covers it.

I guess my approach is more along the lines of if you have Sam Darnold, you should go for it at an exorbitant rate since you're likely fucked anyway. Punting simply becomes a matter of cosmetics for bad teams. It's a delay tactic. Losing by 30 is the same as losing by 3, though.

I'd probably be more conservative with an elite QB since they're more likely to offset punts with touchdowns.

The NFL should institute a "No punting in your opponent's territory" rule.

Y'all bitches better quit dogging on Darnold. I'm not going to put up with much more of it.
