cmc might already be breaking down.

I've had the same thought. We probably played it safe by keeping him out - especially with Mike Davis looking great - but his workload from college through 2019 is a concern.

Still, just seems like a too steep price for Watson, imo.

didn’t want to consider that but if that is the deal then it would be nice to get something for him. .. however if we are thinking he might be breaking down then who is going to bite on that

I don't think CMC is breaking down, and when he actually does as a running back he's going to be very good in the slot for a few years. There just wasn't a compelling reason to rush his recovery this year.

He looked like CMC during the 2.7 games he played in, but my hope is that we retain Davis and let him handle the short yardage/pass blocking dirty work. I cringe whenever McCaffrey is being wasted on blitz pickup or 3rd and 1.

Personally I'd trade CMC if it meant getting Watson, and I'm a huge fan of CMC so it would pain me seeing him leave.

QB's like Watson just don't come around that often and at his age he'd be the franchise guy for a long long time. RB's are much more replaceable.

Davis is going to be too expensive, even at 3M a year. We're starting out with 18.3 million in cap space, but we have a whole lot of holes on the roster. Here's a short list of the players we need to re-sign:
    • Tyler Moton, who will likely get 14m/year
    • John Miller, Michael Schofield, or Chris Reed. The only guard we have right now is Dennis Daley. These guys will range from 1.5-4m a year
    • Chris Manhertz, who gets about 1.15 million per year
    • JJ Jansen, who makes similar to Manhertz.
    • Rasul Douglas, who will get more than the vet minimum we paid him last year.
    • Efe Obada, who will likely cost at least 4 million per year.
    • Corn Elder, who is done with his rookie contract and is our best slot corner (however depressing that may be)
Right now we need depth at Wide Receiver, we have no offensive line at all outside of Center, and we need a middle linebacker. Ian Thomas is our best Tight End. Our secondary is thin on talent. We need a kicker.

Bottom line is, we can't justify spending money on a veteran running back when we can probably get someone who can block on third down as a UDFA.

To be fair, Brady likes empty sets on 3rd down - so you might be right about it not being worth the cost - but rookie running backs are notoriously awful at pass pro. At any rate, I don't see Davis being expensive to re-sign.

I radically disagree with you about WR. Even if we let Samuel walk (we should), Moore and Anderson are one of the best tandems in the NFL. Frankly I don't even think we need both. I would go ahead and trade one now, unless you think it's smart to have two top paid wideouts.
