As a fan of the Panthers, what should be the acceptable baseline for success?

Works for me, gives good winning feeling throughout most of the year. When Goodell hoodwinks everyone into letting half the league into the playoffs, I'd be switching to Consistantly winning in the playoffs

Is your best bet, yes that means you may end up like the chargers and falcons of the last few years but you want to give your team as many chances as possible to go on a run eg: Steelers, Giants.

Typically, in this league, if you throw enough darts in January, you'll eventually hit bullseye. I've always looked at it in terms of "where is the team on December 1". If they are in a legitimate playoff chase at that point, it's a good thing. It doesn't mean "success" has been achieved, but it does mean the door is wide open for that goal.

Right now it's "Consistently making the playoffs; chips will fall where they may in January". After a few years of consistently making the playoffs then "Consistantly winning in the playoffs".

Great thread, but I could not find a category that I personally fit my definition into. For me, success is overcoming obstacles to the point of eclipsing a teams actual talent and/or promise. For example, someone mentioned earlier that the Ravens would be 4-12 under most other coaches (Jon Harbaugh). In my view, the Ravens were a successful NFL franchise this year because they took a team w/ low to average talent and overachieved.

If you can make the playoffs most of the time, you're doing pretty damn well. I do think January is more or less a crapshoot, and if you get there enough times you'll eventually break through, like Baltimore last year.

Once Goodell fucks shit up and lets half the teams in the playoffs then the definition of success changes to winning at least one in the playoffs.

This year was most definitely a success here. After the past few seasons 12-4 felt good. Now next year if we make the playoffs and go 1 and done it won't feel like as much of a success.
