I remember a few years back either Sorensen or Gantt writing an article on Peppers and talking about how intelligent and mercurial he was (seemingly because he carried around a book - that he may or may not have opened. I forget the title).

I don't think Peppers is dumb, he just can't speak well. Some guys like that go on to be president.

still feels like they tried to do what they could. Really, re-franchising him in 2010 wouldn't have actually cost anything - no cap, and if you're either going to sign or trade a guy, that franchise # is just a placeholder until something else happens. But they had this feeling they'd given up, the "don't fuck a girl you wouldn't marry" sort of philosophy. Not something I could deal with, but still, understandable. For Peppers, there was the want to leave, but for $20 million in one season, there was more motivation for the team to move on than for him.

still also feels like he's just kinda vacant. But I don't know, I just have his actions and transcript. He's a ballplayer. He doesn't have to be smart.
