Trade their number 8 pick, center Brandon Sutter and defenseman Brian Dumoulin for him. Puck heads, good deal?

Dramatically overpaid considering that he already said he wanted to sign with the Canes as a free agent after next season. I'm no expert, but I've read that Sutter is a pretty good defensive center, so they gave up value in addition to the draft pick.

I think its a pretty good deal for both sides. The Hurricanes have needed a 2nd line center since Brindy retired. They've been using Rutuu and Jokinen in that role, and neither are ideal.

Sutter was one of my favorite players, but a 3rd line center is easier to find than a legit top-6 center with size like Jordan. The Canes are high on Welsh and a younger player they have in the system (Rask).

Having the two Staals will definitely boost ticket sales and puts the franchise in the spotlight, which is a big deal for a small market team.

To make a big splash next season, the Hurricanes still need a top line winger to play with Eric. Parise might be too expensive, but we might be able to grab Semin or work out a deal for Bobby Ryan with Anaheim.

Now they have signed him to a 10 year deal, 6 million a year

Getting Alexander Semin is pretty awesome.
