I agree with you Pursy...at #9. However if we could have anyone...I would take Blackmon or Claybourne...both will be gone at that point.

I still feel we can get a DT in the second. I actually think we need more depth at LB than DT Thomas Davis has not shown he can play a full season

I understand the thinking of going with Floyd at #9. We have a young QB who showed potential and the team should surround him with weapons. I just don't see it happening. We had a pretty solid offense that for many games was difficult to stop. Everyone besides Shockey and Nanee will be back. How much of a hit will the offense take by replacing those two with Barnidge and Gettis?

remember what life was like the year Smitty got hurt? i hate the idea of not having a WR that can keep the offense humming if Smitty goes down again. still, i wouldn't reach for one but won't be unhappy if Hurney does.

my concern is that even good LBs are neutralized if you can't keep the OL off them. we couldn't do that last year. maybe Edwards is enough. but, i do like Brockers. he may never be all-world but he will tie up blockers in the run game and will create problems for a QB with his length in the passing game. looks to have upside ... but who knows. don't like any of the other DTs that I have watched this year.

Ive watched him since he first started playing for ND. And I feel safe in saying he was their best player on the field since then. I do like him as a football player.

Dont discount the extended studying of him from the Clausen draft days.

However, just because of past issues concerning alcohol with top draft picks (Collins and Jarrett) I really dont see them going that route.

I always thought Jeffery was better tho, so what does that tell you.
He has a pretty clean record too if im not mistaken.

But i think there will be decent value at WR in round 2 if thats a position they really want to attack.

I remember reading an article awhile back about Hurney getting advice about drafting a QB at #1. That advice was to surround him with talent. Now, we already did a good job of doing that last year with Olson, Shockey and a WR in Nanee that was familiar with the O. As of right now, Shock and Leggs havent been resigned and Goodson/Felton was replaced with Tolbert.
Smitty has been extended and Lafell grew into his role. We have Gettis returning from an ACL but not much after that.

If its still true it generally takes a WR 3 years to develop in the NFL then now would be the time to strike as thats how much time were assured Smitty will be around. Hill would be a good fit later on in that scenario.

Blackmon is the only WR id take at 9. I do agree you build around the young QB but you cant reach at 9 when there are more holes on both sides of the ball.

We didnt have our starting LBs out there last year. Losing a MLB the caliber of Beason would hurt anyones D. Our rookie DTs struggled for sure but Beason calls the D. Maybe having a vet MLB there helping these guys line up and getting them on the same page would help. This DT thing is an obsession. Our safeties are horrible and only Gamble is a starting caliber CB. Bringing our defensive leader back will do alot more than reaching for a DT.

Agreed, and Floyd would unquestionably be a reach at 9. Draft analysts change shit up to keep people logging in, but the reality is that you should make your draft rankings at the end of the college season and leave them alone barring injury or off-field issue. Floyd is not in Blackmon's class as a receiver. He is pretty good, but not enough of a difference maker for a team like the Panthers will so many other holes.
