Thoughts on backup QB position going forward

Looking at the offense and how it's designed for Cam and we all enjoy that offense, I started thinking about the backups when we put Anderson in the other day. If Cam were to get hurt in the future, we don't have a backup QB on the roster that run the same package of plays. What are your thoughts as to what we should do in the offseason. My thoughts are to draft late(not preferred because of other needs), or sign a free agent qb that plays that system in college, and move Armanti to the 3rd qb position. That way you have 3 quarterbacks that can continue to run the same or very similar offense. You'd still have to adjust some, but not as drastically.

 

I don't have a problem keeping Anderson.

 

Clausen hasn't been active all year. Sweet gig if you can get it

 

Keep Anderson if he's reasonable. Showcase Clausen in preseason, see what happens. Acquire project QB, via draft or FA, that has potential to perform in the current scheme. The type of guy that could probably be stashed on the practice squad for a season. I don't give a shit what they do with Armanti after they replace him as PR.

 

Cam's big arm is probably more important than his mobility, so Edwards wouldn't have any value as a backup QB. Really, there's no backup you have who wouldn't change the gameplan if Newton got hurt. The offense would be more conservative and ground-oriented, they'd just need someone who could still convert 3rd & 7s. But if you do want to dream about mobile quarterbacks anyway, Ryan Tannehill is your guy.

 

I don't care about running the same packages without Cam, and the change in tendency would be an advantage.

Anderson makes sense to keep. Not tied to him but continuity helps.

 

Yeah, I've got no problems with Anderson as a backup. At least he has experience and won't play scared.
