Steve might not still be a great receiver for three more seasons.

agreed, but we would still have offensive weapons. How many Steve Smith level players do we have on defense right now?

Such as? LaFell and Gettis are role players, Olsen is overrated, and none of the backs have proven themselves to be consistent weapons in the passing game. Right now everything revolves around Steve, which is fine as long as he's healthy, happy, and explosive.

are you serious? No offensive weapons?
It sounds like your answer was more like "is anyone else as good as Steve Smith on this team".

One, and his name is Charles Johnson. But fair enough, Cam Newton himself is an offensive weapon. I just think the other guys are all role players who need a dominant threat to be effective. Olsen, LaFell, and Gettis can't sustain even an average passing offense without Steve.

fair enough. We disagree, I think there are numerous holes on defense and at best two on offense. I tend toward defense, not WR, as the first consideration.

Rather rebuild the defense. Offense looks fine atm.

Thelt, is that you? Charles Johnson is above average but nowhere near Steve Smiths level. The only player we ever had on defense on his level was Peppers, when he wanted to play. The only other one remotely close was Kevin Greene. Beason is a good player but unlike the other two I've never seen him take over a game. Maybe your bromance with Magnus is clouding your judgement.

Only two holes on offense, really? In any case, I'm a believer in taking special players high in the first round rather than even worrying about need. Blackmon is special, but I'm not sure that any of the defenders are, and I definitely don't think any of the defensive linemen are.
