I think you have to continue to build around Newton. Getting some help on the OL and a better WR to go with Smith would be my first priority. I would also try to work out something with Smith so he finishes his career a Panther.

At least we'd never need a punt returner.

I would see who all make the all-pro team at the end of this season and make it a point to sign all of those players, cash draftpicks, trades....make it happen

1st) The trading of future draft picks stops immediately.

2nd) Ensure that the "core" is indeed worth building around. No more big paydays for mediocre or aging talent (see Godfrey or Deangelo).

3rd) This team lacks talent and future drafts would be BPA (with exception of QB). If QB is BPA, then try to trade down.

4th) Build for the future through the draft and limit free agency acquisitions to productive players at reasonable salaries.

    5th) Win games.

    6th) Profit.

The reality is that we have a lot of money tied up in guys who are now on IR. Unless those guys get well and stay that way it may not matter who the GM is cause there will not be much money to do much with.

get more experienced at DT, veteran nickel, LB depth, pay a good returner, draft best defender then OT, and then more defenders. Maybe a WR. Ideally, DT and/or WR would be shorter term situations as I do still have some hope for what we have.

Also, sign myself to a contract, play defense for one miserable play, take my pants down to wag my dick at the cameras and talk about how unfair it was to be the first banned for life NFL player.

    OK I'll play.

    1. Cut Thomas Davis. Possibly Wharton based on cap number
1a. Evaluate special teams coaches available
    2. Sign mid-level defensive line help such as Barry Cofield or Cullen Jenkins (not sure who'll be available next year, those two are guys I wish we'd gotten)
    3. One top level FA - Cornerback (such as Nnamdi this year)
    4. Draft round 1 - Best WR available - ideally we'd get this in later rounds, but apparently we suck at this. Need someone for Steve Smith to pass the baton to eventually, and modern offenses need an array of weapons. Knee jerk reaction is to get a DT, but I don't know of one in this draft that would help as much as an elite WR.
    5. Draft round 2 - Best lineman (offense or defense) available
    6. Remainder of draft - Defensive help
