He's played a lot better than I expected him to, but not "as well as anyone could expect." As already noted, Andy Dalton has played better.

Yards matter. Next step is understanding coverages in tighter spaces. Like, well, the fucking red zone.

Do you know of anyone who expected Cam to play better than he has so far? I certainly did not expect him to be nearly as good as he has been. Dalton is playing well too. He has been more efficient than Cam.

Maybe, but Dalton has red hair and doesn't have Cam's dance moves.

Warren Moon? The problem is with how you worded your statement. You said that no one could have expected him to play better, which means that you think he has played as well as it is possible for any rookie to play. You also said that it isn't possible for Luck to play better than Newton has for his first two games. Both of those statements are wrong.

Yeah, Luck's probably going to be great, and he can have "better games" without passing for 800+ yards. He can go 2-0, he can manage the game and take deep strikes when it's time. They're different QBs, and I just hope Cam is all world, so we don't have to be bitter about it for the next decade.

I think Cam's going to start winning when the run game gets revved up a little.

I can't remember where, but I also read that Rivers shouldn't be considered elite. I strongly, strongly disagree with that. But whatever, I digress...

    Sometimes here, sometimes there

CAM wins when the team wins. It's gonna take a little more effort than just him putting up big numbers. He's winning some fantasy owners' games, I would suspect so, those who drafted him bfore game one and actually started him..

I saw Rivers play most every home game in person at NCSU, and a few away games. Met him the first time his soph year, tall skinny kid looked to be 12.

Saw him progress. Knew he was good, playing for an average team, sometimes with a shitty D. Too bad he started after Holt left. They woulda been special, for sure.

Nobody ever expected him to be a 'franchise QB' or even as good as he is. I'm sure many San Diego fans , ownership and staff consider him 'franchise'. most folks shot him down before the draft complaining about his throwing motion. "Elite"? Sure, I think so. The 'best'? No, certainly, though I'd imagine many teams jumping to pay him and trading rediculous pics for him, absolutely. homer for him? Sure, I'd admit it. But many agree with my assessment who aren't.

Moral of the story: nobody knows 'till there's a body of work. Sometimes, by the time a QB might be considered 'elite' or 'franchise' even, it might be for a fleeting length of time.

I wonder why the chargers drafted rivers in the 1st round and kicked brees to the curb if they didn\'t think he was a \'franchise QB\'....humm

Nobody knows for sure under there's a body of work, but I have a really good track record overall. Rivers is the one I was most wrong about, because I did get hung up on the throwing motion and the weak arm, although I extensively praised his intelligence, touch, and accuracy. My point is simply that projecting QBs isn't like playing the lottery. There is skill involved, and some people are better than others. A number of posters in this forum have made astute points regarding Cam's existing flaws, and those will likely need to be addressed if he is to become a very good NFL quarterback, much less elite. In the meantime, the ESPN hype machine will react to his yardage and anoint him prematurely.

Because Brees wasn't playing well at that point. Teams make that mistake all the time where they want immediate performance from a position that peaks in the late 20s. That's one of the reasons I was so adamantly against their decision both here and in the magazine, because I saw things in Brees that led me to believe he would become a very good quarterback (didn't see him being -this- good, though).

And Luck failing is relevant to Carolina's future success, how again?
