IMHO that has a lot to do with why we are not very good. Go back to 2008 where we traded for a second first round pick to get Otah. If we had not done that deal and drafted Otah instead of Stewart with our existing pick then we do not give up 2008's 2nd rounder or 2009's first rounder. The second rounder in 2008 could have been Matt Forte, if you think we needed to add a running back that year. In 2009 we would have had a first round pick so we could have reached for Everrett Brown without trading another first round pick. In 2010 we would have had a first round pick which certainly would have helped the team assuming we did not reach for Pickle in the first round. And of course not reaching for Edwards would have let us keep our second round pick in 2011 which was almost a first round pick since we had the first pick in the second round.

Hindsight is 20/20 but imagine we had done this:

2008 - no Stewart, draft Otah and with our second round pick take Deshean Jackson

2009 - no Brown, we choose from Hakeem Nicks and Ziggy Hood

2010 - with a first round pick still in our hands we take Devin McCourty

Well, if you miss on a guy, you haven't lost two picks.

True, Thelt. You can't assume those missing picks would have been used on good players, but trading future picks almost always means having fewer total draft choices and lesser players.

What still blows me away is the fact that we drafted Stewart. Certainly he has turned out to be a good player but in a lot of ways he was a wasted pick. We already had DW and he was ready to break out with Foster moving on. A guy to back up DW and assume a few carries per game to keep him fresh would not cost anywhere near a first round pick. Mike Goodson could do that fairly well, Sutton probably could too.

Add to that the fact that we then spent big money to keep DW and it gets even stranger. If you let DW walk and start Stewart then it sort of makes sense because running backs wear out so fast. They did not do that though.

Imagine if we had used the pick we used on Stewart to acquire a player as good as he is but who plays WR, Corner or DT.

I\'m a duck fan so i was stoked that we drafted him and i wanted Williams from his draft outta any other RB that year. BUT RB\'s arnt that hard to find nowadays. I\'d be happy as shit if we got D. Jackson....But we still wouldn\'t have someone to throw him the ball so fuck it. Hurney is well a dumb shit. How he still has a job idk hes does the exact opposite of want JR says he wants in a franchise like the packers or colts. That panther war room video of hitler says it all lol

We needed OT badly that year. I believe I was on board with that in the first, even though I've been complaining about not replacing Jenkins since he left.

And while Otah hasn't really worked out, at the time I was all for just taking OT in 1 and getting a RB later. Definitely was much against the Stewart pick. He's a great player, but his position was definitely not as high a priority as we made it. IMO at the time and what followed seriously pissed me off.

I think that's when I started souring on Hurney, before that he'd been good about trading back. I fucking hate trading future high picks in the draft.

I have no problem with drafting Otah. I just think they should have taken him with our existing first round pick that year and avoided the trade with Philly. Finding a decent backup running back for DW could have been done cheaply.

It makes the think they did not have much confidence in DW's ability to be a feature back coming into the season. I am still a fan of Fox but I will put some of this one him. He should have played DW more and less Foster so they would have known they had a stud in DW.

When healthy, Otah and Stew are decent picks. It was when we failed to bite the bullit the following year that really stung us. From then we started reaching.

Trading picks has provided mixed results for us, you can look as far back as the Gilbert/Ricky Williams draft or the parlaying of the Revis pick into Beason and Kalil.

Imagine, a bit more finesse and we coulda had Revis and made a play for Aso this year.

But im under no illusions that Hurney would have drafted Deshaun Jackson. We havent hit at WR since Moose and Smitty.
