Definitely a big relief if that goes through.

that needed fixing. the 5th year option is a big deal I guess, but I wonder what it does to potential extensions. Also, oddly enough, signing bonuses prorate over all 5 years per that guy the Packers fired.

Good idea if it works out. If Newton is a bum at least we won't be stuck with a huge payday coming for years and years.

Teams are also spared from the impossible situation the Panthers found themselves in this year... the inability to move out of that top spot.

Would the fifth year option be at the team's discretion? If so then it really does not matter if you have to pay him the average of the top ten QBs that year. By then you either work out a long term deal or part ways.

Yup, but most teams would probably use it. Its a good deal financially. For example at 5 years the panthers would pay Newton $35 mil. Most teams would have killed for a 5 year 35 mil. deal for a #1 overall a few years back.

ESPN was reporting the 5th year cost was going to be the average of the top 12 QBs. Hopefully if he is worth a shit we can already have a deal in place for years 5-whatever

More importantly we can dump him after four years if he sucks.
