Best pro offense?

I like the one-read, spread system. It's where the NFL is heading.

Looking forward to seeing Shula holding up huge posters between plays, with large numbers drawn in crayon (lots of pretty colors too!)

 

What would you consider the offense the Cowboys ran back in the 90s when they were winning rings? That offense was one of the most balanced I have seen. They ran over you with Emmitt and could pass all day with Irvin and Novacheck. Granted talent had a lot to do with it but they still had a good system where they could run and pass equally well behind a huge OL.

 

The WCO came from Coryell's system so my vote goes to the father of the modern passing game. Besides that, I love the basic philosophy of Coryell's system. "Air Coryell" is based on the philosophy that you should attack the defense at all times. Push them vertically spreading the defense out and making them work as individuals and not as a unit. Passing routes are based off timing. That's the key factor to this offense, which is the foundation of the passing portion of the WCO. Gotta go with the original...

 

It was the Coryell offense, which is what they run now with Garrett (who of course was a Cowboy's backup).

Sid Gillman really started that system, but Coryell certainly progressed it. Him and Walsh made the passing game what it is today.

 

well, given that it's essentially a toss up between Coryell and WCO, for me as a layman it makes more sense for Coryell because the terms are all descriptors. You know the terms, you know the play for each player. WCO you don't have that. Plus Coryell is all about making a few plays into a few hundred plays and I dig on that - the extra formations and shifts and shit. From an innovation standpoint, I'm all Walsh, and the idea that he was able to do so much from split-backs in the 80s is fucking remarkable. I mean, teams playing nickel against his base split back offense. That's something you'll never see again, powerful shit.

 

What do you think killed that? The zone blitz?

 

zone blitz didn't help. Also specialization, and the adaptation to 3WR, and the death of the fullback as a legitimate running option. Two decent backs, plus the ability to mix up passing more, made that work IMO.

 

I remember (some interview back in the day) Steve Young mentioning how much he hated playing against Dom. San Diego and NO do some split back stuff but it's usually out of the gun.
