    General question for the board:

Does not having free agency factor into your thoughts when considering drafted QB "insert name/round" ?

No but looking at potential free agents and the quarterbacks on our roster does.

Because of the labor situation, any team which drafts a quarterback expecting him to start even a majority of that team's games is being incredibly foolish.

Couldn't you say the same about signing one? No practice for them, either. And considering we have a new staff / system, our guys (who suck shit) dont know anything, either.

    It's FUBAR.

I can name a half dozen guys who are available in FA who know our system, and we will inevitably have FA. You know they fit, know a system that isn't hard to learn, and you don't have to spend years working on their technique.

That's true but there's a reason those guys are available.

Agreed, and it's because NFL teams are always obsessed with finding a young face of the franchise instead of just worrying about who gives the best chance to win right now. The tough thing for young QBs is not learning the team's specific system so much as the unbelievable change in complexity and responsibilities from college to pro. Veteran QBs have been around and can process individual team systems in relatively short order.

That is why you see teams draft and start Matt Leinart when they have Kurt Warner on the roster already..... Give me a veteran QB, even if he has rode the bench for a while over a rookie any day.

somewhat, sure. Some haven't had a shot.

I mean, toward WP's question, I can't possibly imagine having a shortened offseason and not having a veteran QB or two.

Last year we had less experience by far than any other team at QB. We followed that by being worse than any other team by far at quarterbacking. I don't know if that's a 100% hard rule, but fair to say any team with as little experience as we had at QB can't really be an ideal success situation.
