We do not need another rookie QB. Clausen and Pike are guys we can develop. We need a solid veteran who can start for us for a year or two. John Kitna played well for the Cowboys last year. Is he a free agent? A guy like him who is still solid but at the end of his career would help us transition. If you do not think Clausen or Pike will ever develop then draft another QB, just not first overall. We need that guy to make an impact right away and I do not see a QB who can do that.

Nothing about the Panthers QB situation is good. Moore's poor performance and injury deprived Clausen of the year he should have spent carrying a clip board. But when Clausen was focred into action, did you see anything to develop? Nothing from the new coaching regime indicates that they have any confidence in Jimmy Clausen.
Ideally, I agree that we need a veteran but do we have any idea who that is? Is Kolb worth the contract he will command? Does Donovan McNabb have anything left? I've seen Billy Volek mentioned. Maybe he could be that transition guy, but transition to whom?

I agree with everything you just said. This is why we will take Gabbert at #1

If we start another rookie qb this upcoming season, assuming there is one, we are going to struggle again and be lucky to win more than three games. In the mean time another year will pass for our guys who are in their prime like Beason, Gross, Stewart, etc. Guys starting to go down hill like Smith will be be that much older too. We have a decent team in place it just needs a QB. Sadly I think we are not going to spend the money necessary to acquire one who can help out right away.

It's not necessarily money it's currency too, in the form of draft picks. It's a seller's market for teams like Philly and Cinci, a lot of teams are after two guys.

I don't doubt that we'd pay someone, I'm just hoping we don't pay the wrong guy, again. And who's really out there in FA?

And, if we don't get a starting vet QB Smitty will probably be gone. Kind of a catch-22 because dealing him would help us amass picks to trade for a QB but if we had a good one, we probably wouldn't be dealing him.

It's a very tough decision. I say we go Gabbert but if we decide on Dareus or Bowers I'd be pretty happy with that as well.

Considering that STL already had some talent on the defensive line, and Bradford was a once-in-a-decade prospect at QB, I don't think that required a whole lot of insight. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if the Panthers do select Newton or Gabbert simply because we already know that Hurney is an idiot. The surprise would be if they did the smart thing and took Dareus, then brought in a veteran QB to compete with Clausen.

We could debate whether or not this holds true for most drafts, but in this particular one I'm actually quite confident in saying that you will get better value at QB in the 3rd round than DL or DB. This is actually a deep draft for QBs with some legitimate potential, it's just that none of them are great. Regardless, you generally don't want any quarterback starting during their first two seasons in the league.
