Not directly stated by any means. Go back to the SS closed door meeting with JR. Consider where the franchise is in relation to his career and what he has sacrificed waiting for QBs to develop. Then there is Rivera's comment, "SS is on the team right now." Later he said something like, "We will decide if SS is right for the Panthers and he will decide if we are right for him." Unusual comments for someone with 2 years left on his deal. If you are going to trade him, this would be the time.

I think we may trade him as a favor to him, if that makes sense. You probably knew all this stuff, but I am not sure so..

Yep, thats what Marty will have done.

But if Riveras looking with fresh eyes and we actually dont pull another Hurney on draft day a 33 pick should bring more to the franchises future than an aging Smith. Plus you also get him off the books to make room for another "marquee" player should you choose.

Of course, we could draft another bust and look like tools again.

I really don't want to trade with the Pats. I know they have plenty of picks, but they always ream their trade opponents. Last thing we need to do is give a star away for a song to the evil empire.

Can someone show me a quote from Smith or the Panthers that would clearly indicate he wants out? K, thx.

I want him out. Are you fucking satisfied? Can you not read the posts about his age, his drops, his attitude, his taking chances playing flagfootball, etc etc etc.

Its time to move on with this team, and that means get fucking better.

First time that there is no Steve Smith even mentioned in the top WRs discussion . .. hope he pays attention to these lists. Smitty is likely to play with something to prove in a fresh system. I don't think it's time to count him out just yet.
However, IF there is no football this year it would be very bad timing for him given his age and wear.

rake, I truly know how much Steve Smith has meant to this organization. I also VERY MUCH feel sorry for him along with other WRs because we haven't had a QB worth a shit for some time now. With that said, its no surprise to me that 89 isn't listed as a top WR in the league anymore. In fact, if I did see Steve Smith's name mentioned, I would honestly first check to see if they were talking about the NY Football Giants' Steve Smith, instead of ours.

89 has been great in Charlotte, but the truth is he has probably lost a step, and for a WR who isn't 6'2"-6'3" losing a step isn't a good thing.

And to be clear, I honestly do appreciate what he's done in Charlotte. But a trade could work out better for both the Panthers and Smith. He could finish his career on a high note for someone else (maybe NE) and we could get a pick or 2 in return to bring in new younger replacements. Just my 2 cents.

Well, there will be football in 2011.

Plus, Steve Smith will be playing in Carolina, probably with Cam Newton as his QB.

    Sorry.

Put Smith at slot and he is a badass again. That is exactly what the Pats will do with him.

Right, Smith to the Patriots. Because once Belichick dumped his aging diva mid-season 2010, their passing game went to shit.

Rule of thumb: never trade anything with New England. Ever, again.
