In the prior agreement, it was Hurney getting what Fox wanted. By 2008, the FAs were very cheap, so that became a separate thought process. 2010 gave Fox, by most descriptions, little input. Which means Hurney doing what JR wants directly.

At least, all of that's in my view. Blaming Hurney is to know definitively what he did and didn't decide, isn't it?

I would have fired him a couple of years ago, personally, and perhaps without the labor issues coming up, Jerry would have.

Its obvious though that Marty has simply excecuted Jerry's lock out insurance plan over the last couple of seasons.

I don't think it does a lot of good to fire him in February though. Not with the draft coming up. So I voted for Dukey.

He tried to trade this years # 1 to move up and get Clausen. Imagine how THAT would be going over about now, especially if Luck were out there.

I think JR has alot more control than people either think or want to believe. Armanti Edwards was IMO to bring in the ASU fan base to the Panthers. What other rookie besides Edwards and Claussen had jerseys for sale prior to pre-season. JR is a rich and powerful man who is used to getting what he wants. After the debacle in the Arizona playoff game I think he grew tired of Fox and wanted a change. As long as he is in control he will have some say on what goes on. By the way I voted no. We are not going to get a premier GM while JR is in control.

Btw, for the local writers who were wondering, it's pretty obvious there is a LOT of anti Hurney sentiment out there. And was all season long, but somehow it flew under your radar. Wonder why that was.

Considering his background, I don't see much that points to him having some incredible pedigree, or having a skillset that you couldn't find in many other people. When I think of a GM, I would want a guy that can evaluate talent, so he'd have to be able to break down film and see the game's minutia, and/or be a financial whiz to structure contracts so that they are advantageous to the team.

With the Eagles, Joe Banner is the president of operations, or the money guy, and Howie Roseman and Tom Heckert (GMs by name) before him were pegged with identifying talent. Of course Andy Reid has a huge part in the final say with the talent those guys identify. Even though I love to hate all of them because they are all still the Lords of no rings, there hasn't been many moves that have crippled the teams chances to win, and many a good move that has kept them winning 8-12 games a year.

The impression that I get is that Fox must've had a huge part in the identification of talent. The only way I could possibly justify keeping Hurney is if he was the one making 90% of the good picks, and Fox was the one that kept going down the wrong avenues. When I look at the Panthers, there are so many times that I think that at least from the Eagles mgmt perspective, they NEVER would done some of the moves. 2 1st round RBs in 3 years??????? Firable offense. Trading a 2nd round pick, with an unproven qb, and a rookie backing him up, for a guy that didn't even play in D1, and that you don't even explect to play the same position in the pros???? Firable offense. Trading the next years #1 pick for a DE that has had little to no impact for his first two years???? Firable offense. A contract extension for Jake F$)@ing Delomme???? Firable offense.

If a new GM came in today, what are the terrible ripple effects you would feel on this team? A guy is starting with a relatively blank slate, and some decent pieces, and the only way to go is up. Rivera has been here here less than a month, so its not as if there is some synergy they would lose there? I really don't get what he could possibly bring to the table that you couldn't find in fresh talent or veteran scouting talent somewhere else.

I honestly just don't get it. As far as JR being a rich and powerful man, he's an NFL owner, they all are. I don't see his ego as being any bigger than any other NFL owner I could think of.

He should have been out the door the same day Fox was.

Better to address a mistake at an inopportune time than to not do it at all. If you have a financial advisor who has consistently mismanaged your money, then you don't wait another year to get rid of him just because he already filed your taxes.

Edwards is never going to be worth #33, but even if the pick had been #45, it still would have been an unconscionably stupid move, which is why almost every Panthers fan (at least those who weren't also ASU lovers) couldn't believe that Hurney did it.
