That means, correct me if I am wrong, that Kalil could go free? Charles Johnson? I think both are more important to us right now than DW, considering the depth behind him. Should we not, can we not, re-sign our own veterans to long-term deals now? I need to understand!!

DW has said he wants to return. I suppose you could tag him because you have no intention of giving him a long-term deal.

Kalil would require top left Tackle money to franchise, so maybe not. Charles Johnson's status could be different. I THINK he is an UFA. Can anyone explain this? I also heard that they may reclassify free agents as a condition of the CBA.

I would tag him. Can't afford to lose him without something in return, and it might be more reasonable longterm to rent for a year or two than sign for 6. I mean, like it or not he's missed more time than Stewart.

Kalil? Well, that whole Leonard Davis thing a few years ago leveled the playing field to a point. Other linemen at an elite level don't make that much less than tackles. But I doubt he'd get as much as Gross.

Another thing I might anticipate with the Panthers might be 4 year deals. One of the last deals that we did/didn't/whatthefuckever offer to Peppers was/wasn't a 4 year deal in the style of, but without the ridiculousness of, the Asomugha deal. Instead of being as backloaded as 7 year deals and with tons of bonuses up front, it's more structured and open. DW wouldn't likely get more than that, and it'd be nice to see Kalil and others shorter too.

Left tackle money for a center? Who's the highest paid center in the league? Mangold?

Per this DW will be tagged

the other FAs, my guess, they'll just lock up. DW is the most volatile of them, with the most value, and the most contentious to sign.

Johnson is the most likely to swing on whether or not the draft is ahead of FA.

there's been a new "highest paid center" a few years in a row. Faine in 08, Brown in 09, Mangold in '10. Not sure if Kalil will be next, because Mangold's deal was so expensive.

Union disputes league claim that franchise tags are available

The NFL has told teams that the franchise tag will be available to them this offseason. But the NFL Players’ Association disagrees.

In a memo to all NFLPA certified agents, the union said that the league cannot restrict players’ movement by using the franchise tag.

“We have received reports that the NFL is advising clubs that they can place a franchise tag on players whose contracts will expire at the end of the 2010 league year,” the Union says in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by PFT.

“The current CBA provides that ‘each club shall be permitted to designate one of its players who would otherwise be an Unrestricted Free Agent [or Restricted Free Agent] as a Franchise Player each season during the term of this Agreement.’ The 2011 season is not a ‘season during the term of this Agreement’ so the NFL has no valid
basis for claiming the right to franchise players in 2011.

“If you have had any discussions with clubs about their intent to use the Franchise designation for the 2011 season please contact the NFLPA to discuss this matter. Meanwhile, we will make sure that the rights of any players improperly designated will be protected.”

So we can add the franchise tag to the list of items that the league and the union disagree about, with a month to go before a likely lockout.
