CHARLOTTE - Eric Washington, who helped the Chicago Bears rank as a top-10 defense this past season, was named as Panthers defensive line coach on Monday.
In 2010, Washington's first season as Bears defensive line coach following two seasons as an assistant line coach, Chicago ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring defense (17.9 points per game) and ninth in total defense (314.3 yards per game). The Bears ranked second in rushing defense (90.1 yards per game).

"Eric brings youth and experience to our staff and is a good fit to work with our young defensive line," Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said. "He has coached on all levels of football and we are pleased to have him on our staff."

The 41-year old Washington coached on the college level prior to his stint with the Bears. He coached Northwestern's defensive line from 2004-07 and spent three season at Ohio University in the same capacity prior to that.

Washington, who played tight end for legendary coach Eddie Robinson at Grambling State, got his start in college coaching as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M in 1997.

DL coach last year, asst. DL/defensive assistant two years before that.

Honestly, no opinion. I don't know him.

    yeah.
    Which is odd.

He got a promotion because Marinelli got promoted. Maybe the move was temporary and he didn't want a step down.

He's 41, and he's had success. He fits the mold.

Eric Washington is entering his third season in Chicago after being hired on January 16, 2008, and his first as the defensive line coach. Washington spent the previous two seasons as Chicago's defensive assistant/assistant defensive line coach.
Washington came to the Bears from Northwestern University where he spent four seasons as the Wildcats defensive line coach. During the Bears 2005 training camp, Washington served as a coaching intern, assisting the defensive line. A year earlier, Washington was in the same capacity with the Atlanta Falcons helping mentor the linebackers.
While at Northwestern, Washington tutored such current NFL players as Barry Cofield and Luis Castillo. In 2007, he tutored defensive tackle John Gill to all-Big Ten honorable mention honors. Gill led Northwestern in tackles for loss with 8.5 and also recorded four sacks in 2007.
Prior to his time in Evanston, Washington served as an assistant coach at Ohio University from 2001-03 tutoring the Bobcats' defensive line and also the Bobcats' kickoff coverage team.
Washington began his college coaching career at Texas A&M University as a graduate assistant in 1997, after working as an assistant coach at high schools in Louisiana, Illinois and Texas.
A native of Shreveport, La., Washington earned a B.S. degree in health and physical education, with an English minor from Grambling State University. He played football there for legendary head coach Eddie Robinson.
Washington is married to wife, Amy.

why the lateral move after one season? I can see if he was the assistant DL coach

plus he doesn't have all that much NFL experience

only thing I can think of? He wasn't under contract, didn't want to be under Marinelli's shadow. Can't make a name of yourself if you're under a barking coach taking over your spot. I don't know if he was under contract or not, though.

Otherwise, I dunno. He's a young guy climbing the ladder, which is what we want, so I'll take him. There are other guys I wanted but they were wrapped up by existing staffs looking for a piece or two.
