It's every bit as bad as that, and then some.

It took 12 years before the Jets were able to draft Sanchez and get back to the conference championship, which they lost...to the Colts.

    12 years. Shit.

The Panthers may not have a shot at a franchise QB for 12 years...or more.

That's how huge the loss of Luck is.

While people have gleefully posted lists of all the first-round QB picks that were busts, how 'bout this: of the 12 2011 playoff teams, 8 of them have quarterbacks that were drafted in the first round, and one more (Brees) was pick #33. Only Hasselbeck, Cassell, and Brady were late-round picks. Two were first-overall picks: Vick and Peyton Manning.

The fact is, franchise QBs aren't delivered by the stork; they're drafted in the first round. The Panthers, as they are so good at, picked a bad season to have a bad season. With no credible 1st-round QBs this year, we're stuck in the mediocracy (or, maybe, even the shit) trap. Again, another season - or series of seasons - maybe even 12 seasons - without a franchise QB.

Is there any college QB talent hidden out there that a good scout could find? Do the Panthers even have somebody on their college scouting staff who is an expert, a specialist in QB's? Considering that we have a front office that hasn't really given a shit about the QB position for years, I'd say the answer to that question is "no".

Maybe finding a qualified college QB expert and hiring him might be JR and Hurney's first order of business. It would sure beat buying some more Charlie-Weis-like BS hype again.

1/3 of the QBs in the playoffs are on their second team (even some of the magical first rounders)

That's horse shit. An alternative to creating an offense that can keep up to them in a shoot-out is to build a defense that can contain them. Both options will take time.

How many "defensive" teams have won a Super Bowl lately? And of those how many have franchise QBs?

Since 2004 every Super Bowl winner has had a "Franchise" QB. The last one to use an average QB was Tampa Bay and Brad Johnson was having his best year ever as a QB. So we can attempt all we want to to keep up on Defense, but its not what wins Championships anymore.

Mike Minter made an interesting point in a Charlotte Talks interview this morning on WFAE (not your usual source for sports news, of course): Since most of the new rules imposed by the league over the past few years have made it more difficult for defenders to, well, defend, offenses are simply free to score more.

So I'm just not down with the John-Fox-philosophy that says "offense? We don't need no stinkin' offense; we'll just hold opponents to less than 10 points" when we're up against a league whose rules favor the scoring of points and a division with three very potent offenses and three franchise QBs (a #3 overall, a #33 overall, and a #17 overall).

So I'm not optimistic that, even with a lot of time, we could build a defense that could adequately contain the offenses we're facing if we don't acquire a franchise QB and build a competitive offense.

Work with me here, OK? I'm just looking for more excuses to be depressed and pissed off.

So what potential franchise QB's (who aren't just a few years away from being eligible for Medicare) are available to us - as their "second team" - in free agency next season? There've been some lists posted right here on TBR, and they didn't exactly inspire warm fuzzies.
