    Our first 4 round selections

    Carolina Panthers
Top needs: WR, DT, LB, DE, QB
    First round: No first-round picks
    Second-round (48): DL Tyson Alualu
    Third-round (78): QB Dan LeFevour
    Fourth-round (112): TE Garrett Graham

Summary: I don't want to bring up again why the Panthers aren't drafting until Round 2 ... anyway. What I like about Alualu is the versatility. He can be a penetrating tackle in a 4-3 scheme (a 5-technique), or become a 3-4 defensive end. He sheds blocks well and gets into the backfield with regularity. LeFevour is a quarterback who I think will need work in dealing with the small windows and timing of the NFL, but he has the athleticism and the arm. He's a guy worth developing. Graham caught a lot of passes at Wisconsin.

If we were drafting in the first round and took Everett Brown with our first round pick I would be pretty happy.

I don't think we need to draft a TE.

We've needed one for years according to every mock draft ever.

Good point about the TE position. Its just not very important in our offense. They basically just block & run intermediate routes. We're very deep at the position already.

    Penetrating DT in a 4-3 scheme is a 3-technique. A 5-technique is a 3-4 DE.

The 2nd rounder I don't mind. LeFevour in the 3rd is nice, but I'd much rather have a WR. Don't like the TE at all -- wasted pick, IMO.

Yet every year the so-called draft gurus have TE as a pressing need for the Panthers. They must never watch the team play and know what role the TE plays here. What we have isn't Pro Bowl material but they suit the offense we run.

Scheffler just isn't much of a fit for our offense , Cleveland or St. Louis would make good landing spots for him.
