    Compete with Jarrett???

Why not just hold tryouts at Independence high school for competition with Jarrett?? We could open the tryouts only to those who have never started on the high school level or higher to be fair to Jarrett.

Problem children or not, we need someone to throw the ball to that represents some downfield threat.

Not sure. I'm only saying IF. He also cut more loose this year than he did last. Not adding last year wasn't as bad since there was little to no subtraction. This year has been no additions plus a number of vets leaving. So your argument does really show two identical points.

Not surprising to see fans questioning things after so many well known players are cut or let go from the team and no one being signed to replace them. Other than a couple of WR's though there really wasn't anything out there worth signing. I imagine we'll seea more active front office after the draft however especially once player cuts from other team start happening.
Does appear that the days of the Panthers making a big splash with free agent signings has come to an end. And after some of the disasters they've had in that area who can blame them for not wanting to take a chance on repeating history.

I hate to think how all these teams are taking up all this new money and bigtime players and we somehow have to live without a 33 year old fullback with a bum back and a DT that was due $9 mil.

I'm not that worried. Getting Jake out of here was a win.

I don't agree with spending future draft picks, and I'm kind of worried about that. If we do trade next year's first for lesser position next year, I will take it as a sign that Hurney and by extension, Fox, are more secure than many think.

    that's true.

Of course, I've said time and time again here that I don't want us to keep doing that. Draw a line in the sand, say 'enough'.

But, if we've done it already, and this year's a much better draft class than next year should be, you're possibly getting value there that you wouldn't next year.

I dunno. The hard part is that inevitably, any trade of a future first is a bad trade. I can't think of one in which the value of the trade worked out in the team's best interests...the Otah one wasn't great value despite the lateness of our pick, the Brown value was bad. The collateral issues (setting up a run game, putting together a pass defense/pass rush) were both solved by these trades, though, and in Brown's case, at a modest salary.

A third case - trading 2011's 1 - to get, say, a top DT that fits the D, and plays both the run and pass well, could make our defense dominant. We have some quality at DT and we're OK there. But a top DT again would round everything out. Dedication to our front 4, if it accomplished what moving massive resources to fix the run O or the pass D in the last two years, could be worth it.

this might be the year that next year's 1st doesn't have the market value from previous seasons.

playing what if though, after the 2 big names at the top, who's the third dt? williams from tennessee? if we are doing that, i might be more inclined to try for one of the top wr prospects instead.

there doesn't seem to be a real consensus on the 3rd - 6th DTs. Not unlike most of the WRs in the first 100. It seems to be a scatter.

I also don't know that the team has a real interest in a DT. We have two guys we annointed starter, one vet to back them. A couple of young guys for depth. Unless it's a real upgrade, I can see us going without a DE, DT. My biggest concern for the DT depth as it sits is a lack of a backup NT - Tyler, Johnson, Irvin, and Hayden (even though he started at NT) are all UTs to me, only Leonard is a NT. Maybe E. Johnson if we tried. We also have the ends we can rotate at UT. Not much else at nose. Doesn't need a huge player, or a wide body, just more depth that's a realistic run stopper. Unless a top gap-jumper came along that was strong at the POA, it's NT that I'd worry on.
