I'd be thrilled if someone came to the Panthers and gave them anything to tag and trade peppers

yeah, but Kearse had injuries to his knees or something. Julius has been pretty healthy in that respect.

I see it this way - Isn't this the last time they can franchise him? If not, it may be next year, when they'd have to franchise him at like 23 million or so.

If they do franchise him, he won't sign until the last day he has to -- Carey has stated that. Forget trading him for draft picks.

Nobody wants to inherit his $20 million salary. They'd be in the same boat as the Panthers are now, with no long-term deal and on the hook for that huge salary with no guarantee they'd have him in the future.

Peppers has had plenty of opportunity to sign here, and hasn't.

On the bright side, 31 other teams don't have Julius Peppers, and somehow a team manages to win the Super Bowl every year. The Panthers haven't won a Super Bowl with Peppers. Just like the other 31 teams in the league, the Panthers will move on without him.

Does it suck to lose a player with this much talent? Yeah. Did the FO mismanage this situation years ago? Yeah. Can they do much about the situation now without spending a ton of money irresponsibly now? No.

I think this is about the only option that makes sense at this point.

The decline had nothing to do with tearing up his knee in 06

It doesn't mean he cant be traded...it means he has to be onboard with the trade.

That was said by Chris McClain on WFNZ who spoke to Carey regarding the Peppers situation. I don't know if it exists in print.

The quote was "Carey said they wouldn't sign until the last day, like they did last year".

I suspect he will not get the kind of money that he thinks he will. If he does it is likely due to the uncapped year. If not for that teams are going to think twice about putting a huge contract on a guy who disappears at times and is not a locker room leader.

Yes, indeed, it was a factor. But you can see a decline in the 2-3 years prior.

I think Julius is still peaking, and will for another 2 years or so. But he's not going to get any better after that.

I am interested to see how Charles Johnson plays out. I really do see a ton of talent there, particularly off the edge. Brown needs to develop, but he showed flashes. Baring a disaster, we are looking mighty fine at DT.

Pep's gone, so start thinking about progressive ways to replace the 20-25 dymanic plays he gave us each season. Well, minus 2007, which was just complete and utter AIDS.

Yes he was. Interesting stuff, if he's right. I'd like to see similar charts on other DEs.
