Won't happen (he won't come here with our QB situation), but we got a mention.

Weis might not leave Indiana, after all

We reported last night that Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis has cleaned out his office.

But he might not be taking the boxes of photos and knick-knacks (and ding-dongs) very far.

Peter King of NBC suggests that the Indianapolis Colts are a "very, very dark horse" to secure Weis' services in 2010.

Such a move presumably would entail a retirement of retired offensive coordinator Tom Moore from his role as consultant. And it would potentially place a thick layer of frost on Weis' relationship with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

As former Colts coach Tony Dungy said in response to King's suggestion, "We consider Charlie an Indiana Hoosier now that he's been at Notre Dame all these years. We don't consider him a Patriot."

(Added former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison during the same exchange, "Where's all this 'we' coming from?")

King also reports that the favorites to hire Weis are the Patriots, Chiefs, and Panthers. The Panthers' interest presumably hinges on coach John Fox and G.M. Marty Hurney returning.

But why would Weis want to jump from one hot-seat situation into another? If Fox and Hurney somehow stay for another year, the pressure will be even greater, and the leash presumably will be shorter.

So look to the Pats and the Chiefs.

Unless the Colts decide to shake things up.

Peyton already had to trump Caldwell when he tried to get rid of Moore last time, and OC of the Colts is almost ceremonious anyway.

Weis' ties to Fox make sense for him here. That would buy the group a couple years. Weis almost came to work for Fox in 2002.

I understand the ties part, but I ask, if he has options (and he will certainly have several), why would he come here, with our QB situation (and by extension, our offensive situation) a complete shambles?

Coaches like to make a name for themselves. Turning this franchise back into a winner would be challenge enough for anyone in the coaching business to be interested in.

as opposed to joining a head coach he doesn't know in a new city, on an offense that probably has less talent? I mean, it's quite possibly this or, what, Buffalo? No QB, no line, very little skill talent that isn't also a cancer. Oakland? Nothing worthwhile anywhere. Tampa?

Weis is the one that recommended Davidson to Fox... would be kind of weird to him replace the guy

Whoever wins the 4-A state championship gets to be head coach next year.

I'd rather have the coordinators from the runner-up 4-A state championship game

Odd that the chiefs would be in, I understand the Pioli-Weis connection but it seems like something Haley wouldn't like.
