My point is that we could have gotten a capable back to take some carries from DW and keep him fresh without investing a first round pick to do it. Granted Stewart is probably better than most of the other options we had but it is still putting too much into a backup when we have other holes that need starter quality players.

Running backs are not high value players in my book. The best of them have short careers relative to other positions and most half way decent backs can put up solid numbers if they are running behind a good OL.

as someone else mentioned foster wasn't overrated.

despite his numerous flaws and mishaps i liked the guy. never thought the ground game should have been built around him though. he ran great in the 2 playoff runs. the seattle game might have been different if he wasn't injured...yet again.

We could've traded down and taken Mendenhall! That would've been fantastic.

We could've stayed with Stewart - who we felt more strongly about - and not traded up for Otah. Same logic, "we could've not traded up for Otah, and gotten a tackle later." We wouldn't even have gotten Baker, who was and should continue to be the worst thing we could've done there. We could've waited for other tackles and seen 9 OL go before the 43 pick. We would've easily reached for a guy in the 4th that wouldn't have been good enough. Not until the 6th did a guy with good value go - Carl Nicks. Maybe in the 4th for Anthony Collins. Neither good enough to start.

So, that just doesn't work that easily. And IMO, none of those backs are as good. And that's with me actually stating that I'd have taken a back in 3 - but that was hoping for Rice there. All those backs went high in 2 and 3, and they were tapped out before we would've gotten to them. And Forte wasn't a good compliment to what we had anyway.

I still maintain that Foster would have been productive behind a good OL. Not franchise back productive but much better. Same for a back taken after the first last year. Otah, or similar, was the real necessity.

he did well when he had burst, and Wahle was playing well, as an outside runner. it wasn't until he started to lose his burst that he had to become a strong inside runner.

And yes, many times he had good inside stats. A bunch of draws technically count but didn't make him good in a pile. It sucked seeing him in 07, starting to really embrace that role, watching him quickly wear down.
