there's a Sigma 400 prime I'm looking at, I could get cheap. I'm sure I could use it, it'd make a nice addition.

But, there are three versions of this lens, and this one is undoubtedly the worst and oldest. The AF has actually been known to lock cameras up - they can be upgraded to work better with a new chip but those chips are now fairly rare. Even with that, it's the non-APO version.

But, for $60-70, if I used this manual focus, think that's worth it?

I dont know ANYTHING about the lens in question, but for $70 if all else fails it could be a cool looking paper weight. I say go for it, there's nothing to lose.

    nah. I researched it.
There was the oldest, gray version. Then there was a gray version with a rangefinder and an upgrade in guts. Then the APO version in standard black. This oldest version is kinda crappy - locks up your AF, and not that sharp.

5.6, btw. So, light enough for 400mm.

I'd have bought it for $60-70, because I'd have as well bought a lens of that range that was manual-only for that price, too.
It went for $120, hopefully to someone who knows what he/she is getting.
