Restrictor plates are not in place to protect drivers, and the drivers safety was not taken into consideration when restrictor plates were implemented.

I see how there will be plenty of gray area with the blindside calls. It will be one of those things that will drive people crazy and get constantly discussed on tv. They need to make sure that it's completely unnecessary contact, like blowing up a guy who's 20 yards away from the play, which is what the Steelers have been doing for years. This is what would bother me - if you have a linebacker coming down to pursue a running play and the slot receiver is supposed to block him, you can't hold it against him for doing it without being in front of the player. That would be a ridiculous penalty.

The wedge and the onside kick rules are going to ruin special teams. Onside kicks will be almost impossible to recover, so it will be such a joke when a team lines up to attempt one. Coaches will already be taking off their headsets and packing up for next week.

welcome into the new era of nfl officiating where "intent" becomes a judgement call......and "lawyer speak" dominates the vocabulary of what once was your average, ordinary ref. terms like "giving him the business" have been replaced with "infinity to infinity". a "football move" has been inserted to clarify simple pass reception, fumble, interception calls. we have gone way past the zero calibration set points in tweaking what once was the perfect game. enter into the era of ridiculous micro-managing away of all potential physical risk management issues and have everyone sign the form.....while we negotiate the lengthen the regular season by 2 or 3 more games.....its all in the best interest of the game and the health of the players.

people like to hate on soccer, but here's why it lies on the complete other end of the spectrum from american football: there are only 17 rules in the game.

    http://www.eastmeadowsoccer.com/emsc html files/The rules of soccer.htm

That's it. And in this case, less is more.

American football, on the other hand, has the most complex hodgepodge of rules and regulations, often contradictory in nature, that unless you grew up watching the game, you have no hope of understanding it. I hope the NFl realizes this in its quest to go global. My brother lives in Nicaragua, and when he tries to sit and watch an NFL game, his local comrades try to understand what he's watching, but he has given up trying to explain to them all the intricacies of the game. It is truly an acquired taste.

Honestly, how many judement calls are the referees asked to make in todays game? Holding, pass interference, the whole QB protection gambit, false start/offsides... this list goes on. In all those situations, there are gray areas with no clear cut way of deciding one or the other. All the other sports have minimized their use of judgement calls. Balls & strikes in baseball (sometimes there's a bang-bang play at first, but not often), the foul in basketball and soccer, especially since they never call travelling or palming anymore.

with all due respect, please do not introduce soccer into a football discussion.

And leave out the "yeah, in Europe soccer is called football" line. We're talking about NFL here, not UEFA League

He does have a point though. I watched someone's YouTube of the NFL's greatest hard hits, and I realized, those days will never return. Those devastating hits are what I grew up on and tried to emulate from Pee Wee ball through high school. Ronnie Lott is still my hero. All of that is gone now.
