I know he injured his shoulder last year but I've always liked Kyle Boller. He also seems to be the type of QB who would fit in well in a John Fox system.

We were quick to applaud JDR for going with Garrard, but he came back to earth some in '08 and Leftwich looked pretty damn good filling in for Roethlisberger.

He's another one that's never put it together. I wrote off complaints that he couldn't read a defense but they were undoubtedly true. And taking him down to a game manager type player wouldn't limit those mistakes, either. While he'll get another chance at some point with another team as a backup or competitor, he like most of the theoretical hundred aren't guys I'd give more than a longer shot of winning the job. Definitely, like most, not a player I'd just want to plug in.

Fair enough on Leftwich, in that I don't know the decision making that went on there. The ideal of a top pick still struggling to stay on top after four years is a concern to me, especially for a guy who's a fighter with heart like Leftwich.

NO TAKERS FOR GARCIA, LEFTWICH, LOSMAN, GROSSMAN
Posted by Mike Florio on March 8, 2009, 12:52 p.m.
In a week that saw quarterbacks like Dan Orlovsky, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Chris Simms, and J.T. O’Sullivan secure gainful employment, former starters Jeff Garcia, Byron Leftwich, J.P Losman, and Rex Grossman can’t get a sniff.

So what gives? Though each of the latter quartet remains sufficiently skilled to secure a spot on a depth chart, no one is biting.

Garcia, while long in the tooth, has played well if not spectacularly the past two seasons. Leftwich looked good during his cameo appearances in 2008, despite that catapult-slow release. Losman looks like Adam Sandler. (That’s the only semi-good thing we could come up with about J.P.) And Grossman recently helped keep Jim Rome’s legendary “Rex Streak” alive. (DiMaggio is starting to get nervous.)

Each guy arguably is better than Wrong-Way Orlovsky, Fourth-Down Fitzpatrick, O’Crappy J.T., and the son of a Super Bowl winner who has thrown roughly as many passes as his dad in the past two years.

It makes no sense. Then again, not much about the free-agent market is making much sense to us now.

We need to bring in a better backup QB for Jake. Jake could still go down with that elbow at any time. I do not want to give up another season like we did in 07 because one player goes down. Leftwich would be a good addition.

I still feel we should take pep send him and lucas to New England (where they are lookin for a CB and OLB) for their 1st round (23 overall) and 2 2nd rounders! (34th overall & 47th) Yes i know mostly fantasy but just think how amazing this would be for us if we could make it happen!

    23rd- Brandon Pettigrew
    34th- Josh Freeman
    47th- Fili Moala

    *Make me happy...

there's not a back-up QB in the league that would be an upgrade to Delhomme... that's just ridiculous

I'd agree that there are a hundred players who could be a legitimate backup and could play well short term. "would play as good or better", other than the ideal being certain about it being relatively impossible anyway, I don't believe.

It actually is a very good year to pick out a relatively talented, somewhat experienced player who has failed at the NFL level but could help you out. There's players of all types, sizes, styles out there.
