The secondary was not as good with Godfrey starting as it was the year before he started. Not saying he is necessarily to blame but it is certain that our secondary will need to step up next year if our defense is going to be any good.

    Between pining for Holt and:
The secondary was not as good with Godfrey starting as it was the year before he started.
And: I have not seen a whole lot out of Godfrey yet. He seemed to struggle a lot last year
I'd say you're at least blaming him more than others.

They all have to step up.

I do question whether he can get it done for us. I am not ready to write him off either though. A solid veteran to back him up and provide insurance would not be a bad idea though.

All I know is my gut says maybe.

You can find guys like that later on, Holt wasn't picked up by another team until halfway through the season. It's not perfect but you can find the Deke Coopers of the world pretty easily.

my impression is that Lucas, Gamble, and Marshall (so far, at least) are not very smart football players. Wesley ain't got tons o' gray matter either and haven't seen (or heard) enough of Wilson yet to get a read on his football I.Q.. Seems to me that the reason these corners often look bad in zone is because they have to do more THINKING. With corners who can play well both in man AND zone there would be a little less need for dominant D-linemen IMO since pressure on opposing QB's would improve with better coverage.
Hell I dunno . . . Maybe it has less to do with the afore mentioned CBs smarts and more to do with the panthers secondary coaching. They sure do seem to encourage some fluffyass cushions most of the time.

maybe the offseason coaching changes will help . . . (shrug)

Send Jack to the deep South. That will help our Defense more than anything. D want gave play as much........And my blood pressure would go down. Many QB's out there beeter than Jake they are available........

it looks like the Panthers are keeping Landon Johnson. per the Observer...they are redoing his contract to save the team around 1 million on the cap.He did ok on special teams, the only time he got on the field. that tells you something about th panthers linebacking depth,if the guy cant even gt on the field a year after leading th bengals in tackles

It says more about the Bengals and our ability to evaluate talent

I'm comfortable with our back seven even if Lucas is let go because honestly I think Marshall is his equal if not slightly better. The question is what in the heck does the team do with this mess of a D-line?

We have a situational guys at LDE with Brayton and Johnson, a run stopper lacking a pass rush with Kemo, a St. Louis cast-off that had no business starting outside of our desperation in Lewis and a Prima Donna RDE that if stays may dog it while eating up valuable cap space for potential free agents and if goes leaves a hole with the only really capable starter on the D-line. The way I look at it is the DL slightly screwed at best, then definietly screwed and lastly grab your ankles because this is going to hurt!

From what I have been reading up on from draft sites and listening to the NFL Network, that this year's DT class is weak with Boston College's Raji the only really legit prospect. Additionally, while the DE class is fairly deep it's not top heavy in talent.

    Thoughts?
