If you, or anyone, can find something better I would appreciate the help.

I think you also get it to use it again if you rescind it without the player signing it.

Yes, you can apply it to someone else if no franchise tender was signed, but I still think that you can only sign one guy to a tag each season. I think the part strat quoted is referencing the ability to use it on players in future seasons. I'm not at all sure about that, though.

Okay I'm bored, out of town, and want some shit to read when I get home tonight, hoping this somewhat radical approach gets some discussion.

It's possible the Peppers ship sailed when we let him get to FA unsigned and untraded. Settling for a #2 for Pep is a fail, much like what we let happen with Jenkins. JMO.

No secret I am not a huge Gross fan; paying him top T money long term is not an appealing prospect to me.

We can't really replace Pep, but we can IMO replace Gross (and cheaply by comparison).

Peppers, obviously, is a bigger talent but less consistent, more expensive per year, has already possibly diminished his marketability via his public comments, etc., makes me wonder if Gross actually might bring a higher return.

So again, if we can't get a decent return for Peppers I'd be willing to consider letting him walk, provided we could get good return for Gross.

We'd have a lot of money to spend if we kept neither and wouldn't have to handcuff ourselves cap wise tagging Peppers during FA.

I don't mind losing Gross since he isn't worth an elite LT salary which is what we would have to pay him.

    no.
transition tag probably not in play either, as far as dual usage.

    I was thinking.

    And I thought:

Fox's first 2 high draft picks - Peppers and Gross - were his picks to begin building a franchise of core players through the draft. If we lose both of them after their rookie contracts - FAIL.

We can only tag one of them. Peppers will be the guy to tag since he will command much better trade value than Gross. If we want Gross to stay we have to give him a long term deal for more than he is worth. I would just as soon let Gross walk and tag Peppers and let him and his agent work out a trade deal.

We can slide Wharton back to LT, he had a better year than Gross anyway, IMHO. We can find another decent guard. If we get some good picks for Peppers we have plenty of holes to fill with them. With Peppers and Gross off our cap as well as Lucas and getting Jake to redo his deal we could sign some players, assuming anything decent is left once we get Peppers moved.
