Well my understanding is that we can't trade him for anything unless we clear enough cap space to put the tag on him.

If we wanted to force it, yeah. I was thinking maybe (by some miracle) he'd agree to a one-year deal -- just enough for us to trade him somewhere else. I'm sure that's pretty unrealistic, though. I think the likelihood is that he's just gone. Do not pass GO, do not collect a first round draft pick.

if you do that, you can't sign an extension with the new team that year. So you're screwed. Plus, then we could use that to say, well, screw it, we'll just keep you for that ridiculously small one year deal.

I think we can tag him without having to clear cap room until the end of Feb. prior to the free agent signing period.

Not according to the NFL's salary cap rules, which state that a team must be under the cap at all times.

    Question 1.9a
When must teams come in compliance with the Salary Cap?

    Answer: February 27 .

The way this reads is if caught a team has 7 days to get under cap before fines and /or loss of draft picks .

yeah, we don't have to be under the cap until the start of the new fiscal year, roughly.

Physically getting there wouldn't be too hard, but it would be hard to do so and have money left over. It would be tough to sign a good end before they all got gone, if there was a significant period before Peppers was signed; that would make it much more likely that the trade would either include a player, or that we'd end up leveraging a trade for a player with experience.

At least I'd hope. The first round rate for DEs has cost far outweighing production so far.

I'm pretty sure that the NFLPA and the league accountants start looking at league revenues about now or will soon to determine the number that the players cut is to be based on. The players get a percentage, so nobody knows exactly what it is until everything is compiled and added. It's hard to hold a team accountable for a limit that isn't established yet, so they get a little grace period through Feb.
