I can't completely disagree with the approach, beacuse it's a huge amount of resources in acquisition, and a ton more in effort put toward one player that might not even play this year. But they could put some resources in a midrounds pick. Still, effectively you can't expect a player to contribute right now necessarily. You can hope, but you can't expect. Putting a guy in that isn't ready has a fair chance of ruining him, so going with a veteran approach isn't a bad idea.

I agree with you and I do not really advocate doing this but if you really feel like we have to replace Jake then something like that is the only viable option. Rolling the dice on an available veteran free agent is pretty questionable. McCown is probably as good as anyone we would be able to get in free agency. I would rather stick with Jake and bring in a guy to groom for a couple of years.

we dont appear to have made any progress with QB's under this coaching regime is the only problem I have with that strategy.

I have a feeling that lots of changes will be made after NEXT year, not this year.
Next years' schedule is brutal, so a 7-9 (or worse) isn't out of the question. If Jake has a crappy year next year, and we go 6-10, we might see LOTS of changes, including coaching.

i really dont feel like projecting 7-9 is being pessimistic based on that schedule

Well, I don't think that there's suddenly this game and now Jake must go. I don't believe that and the team doesn't. But, there's the feeling that something additional, something with a future option, must be done.

I don't think that McCown is a terrible option, but ideally I'd like something better. He's not had a long term look at starting and can put up yards in bunches but like most players of that caliber, I'd like to see him succeed before I can put any belief in him.

I liked him coming out. But he's not it. He's got a lot of talent but he hasn't put it together and I'd be surprised if he could. He can't manage a game, isn't a thinker or leader, and makes way too many mistakes.

I guess that's the other edge of the sword. I believe because of the importance of the position, we should invest a lot of resources to securing decent production there. The QB position is like the stock market: high risk/high reward or low risk/low return. (We've gone the low risk route long enough and it's gotten us nowhere) The downfall to drafting high for a QB is that we have a coaching staff that'll probably mishandle him. Like you mentioned, throw the kid to the wolves before he's ready will all but end a career. Some rookie QBs can handle it (Ryan; Flacco) and others can't. The coaching staff would have to figure out which type he is and handle him accordingly. All of this is moot since we don't have a QB coach to begin with.

that goes both ways though. that philly game that jake "lost" with the fade to keyshawn, he had already thrown 3 td passes that game.

to me, it's all a moot point if you win.

regardless, it's time to search for a new guy. maybe not for next year, but the near future.
