yeah, Rooney rule. Great in theory but it apparently screws interim head coaches and teams get around it anyway.

Passion is all well and good, but it's useless if you can't control it with reason. Singletary probably didn't even see the penalty, which did not look serious enough for a flag in the first place. Instead of trying to figure out what really happened, Singletary decides to "make a statement" and throw the guy out of the game.

Another thing - where does he draw the line now? Does he eject a player everytime they get a personal foul? Would he have ejected Davis had the Niners been in a close game late in the 4th quarter? I don't think so.

I doubt he would have thrown him out of the game if it were close. But I think a statement does need to be made to that team. They are bad. Remember when Fox came in following 1-15 he challenged the teams toughness. I think Singletary will do that. They've made some poor personnel decisions which will probably haunt them for a while, so they can't afford to shit like that and I think he was trying to make that point. Could blow up in his face though, who knows.

But again, you've pretty much set a precedent now. What happens if someone else gets flagged in their next game and Singletary doesn't throw that guy out? Players are going to get stupid penalties, regardless. Especially now with Goodell's pee-wee football rules. It happens league wide, to every team on a weekly basis. You can't just start throwing your players out of the game. Punish them behind closed doors, handle it like a professional.

Fox went about it an totally different manner. He didn't use the media as a vehicle to publicly embarrass his team, or players individually. Fox carefully, and methodically, weeded out the weak-minded, and brought in players he could trust in pressure situations. He didn't melt down on his first week on the job, and he has always been cognizant of what gets said to the media. If you look at the best coaches in the NFL, in terms of track record, most tend to conduct business in this manner. Not that it can't work the other way--it has. But I don't see it as commonplace amongst coaches that are at the top of their game right now.

It's neat that a hall of fame linebacker is now the coach of SFO. But, so far, all he has proven at this level is he is 0-1 overall, 0-1 in the division.

Parcells is the best example of what I assume Singletary is trying to be. Parcells blows up to the press about the press, he blows up at the players about the players. He blows up on his coaches to his coaches.

I'm not sure I remember Parcells hanging one of his players out to dry in the press. It may have happened, but far as I know he didn't hang dirty laundry on a consistent basis.
