I enjoy his show; you have a few people around here who don't care for his "black" speak, but I enjoy hearing sports discussed from a perspective I can appreciate. I think it's a matter of time before he gets a regular gig during the week, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he gets a regular afternoon spot.

as an alum of the station, Jones is a solid addition to the lineup (and he's been there for a while so addition may not be the correct term). Forget what color he is--the guy has a good show.

he's a little tough on the Wolfpack in the Raleigh / Triangle market and pretty soft on the heels, would you agree? I know the Pack is not very good in sports these days, but come on................

I find that Jones talks a lot of national topics (NBA, NFL, etc and not NC teams) that I wonder if very many people really could care less about.

Right now, when it comes to NC State/UNC, he is "playing the hits." UNC is up, NC State is down. UNC gets the praise, State the criticism. I was in Raleigh when the Heels went 8-20. UNC got ripped by me, but I always said "get your shots in now, because UNC will be back to collect on old debts." And that's what happened.

As fo rnational topics--given the time of year, that's expected,. He'll be back local/regional when there's something of substance to talk about (and don't say training camp for the colleges--he can't see all of them, and would need RELIABLE guests to talk to him about what they have seen, or were allowed to see). Once the games get close, you will likely have a hard time finding him talking about national items, unless they overshadow everything else.

In this "dead" period, I think he's done a good job of coming up with excellent topics to kick around. Far more intelligent conversation than what Packer and company come up with on the 850's sister station.

Mike: how long ago were you at 850? I didn't always enjoy them too much since moving here in 2005, but I do understand that they basically put Taylor Zarzour and 1090/1490 out of business. Only things that really got me to listen to them has been Dave Glenn and Bomani Jones.

I was there when 850 went all sports in 1997, and left in 2002. I was on 10-Noon, while working for WLFL-TV doing sports. WLFL (Ch. 22) does not produce it's own newscast anymore (hate that for my friends who didn't keep their jobs, but got some satisfaction that ownership was and is losing their ass after not renewing my contract).

Since you're in the media, albeit in Charlotte, do you have any idea how 850 has done ratings-wise since the new FM sports station (99.9 The Fan) started last year?

no idea. I have listened to 99.9 on the rare occasions I am in RAL, and I haven't been impressed by the on-air product, but I am very biased. I have a lot of friends at 850, so my loyalties lie there. That's not to say 99.9 is "bad" just not muy brand of vodka.
