we did some stuff of our own this last week or so. first i tilled the planting zones, mixing in Black Kow compost with the top soil. then after we finally decided what we wanted to put in the ground (lol), we began the actual planting on saturday, then again yesterday afternoon. around the pool, we put in 4 windmill palms, 4 red wine fountain grass, 2 knock out rose trees, 1 merlot lace laropetalum and 2 spirea (anthony waterer and gold mound). up near the house, 2 gold/emerald euonymous, 2 frost proof gardenias, 2 gumpo azaelia (pink and white), 1 merlot lace laropetalum, 1 wine and roses weigela, 1 japanese maple and 5 hostas. we have a few more things to put in but i'll put down the landscape fabric this week and we will begin mulching on saturday. i like the mock orange and leopard grass and some day lillies for the pool and maybe some more evergreen stuff up near the house, to finish things off. pics to come.

if you've ever busted up old clay with an even older, front tine tiller, you can lol at me. needless to say, i skipped the gym this week.

I have the same problem with hard clay, shitty soil. I tilled up last year, tossed in some good topsoil, and the bermuda grass just came back. After researching, I've decided that the best option is to just go with the warm season grasses. Keep the lawn mowed short, aerated, and dethatched, and overseed with rye grass in the fall.
