    Panthers are 'very

    GM: Negotiations look promising

The Carolina Panthers are on the brink of a contract agreement with Muhsin Muhammad.
General manager Marty Hurney said late Tuesday afternoon that no deal had been struck, but that negotiations looked promising.
“It’s obvious we’re very interested in Moose and he is very interested in playing here,” said Hurney. “So hopefully we can get something worked out soon.”
A deal could happen in the next day or two, but both sides stressed that nothing is certain yet.
“We’re making significant progress,” said Joel Segal, Muhammad’s agent. “We’ve talked today numerous times. We’re fighting through a few issues. Moose is looking forward to getting a deal done. That’s been the driving force.”
Muhammad, 34, played for the Panthers from 1996-2004 and spent the past three seasons in Chicago.
Speculation about his return to Carolina has been mounting ever since the Bears cut him last week.
Muhammad, an outstanding possession receiver and blocker in the running game, would be reunited with Panthers’ star wideout Steve Smith. Muhammad also could serve as a mentor for Dwayne Jarrett, Carolina’s second round pick last season.
